Sophos is actually the biggest resource hog running right now on my comp - its process "Savservice" is taking up a big chunk of memory.

Yeah I just looked and saw that Savservice was using considerably more memory then anything else.

Savservice.exe is using up 35 MB of memory. Man alive...
Steam.exe is using 45 MB of memory, on the other hand... my fault...

u can actually turn the saveservice.exe off by going to Run>MSconfig

well yeah - you can end any process in that list - but i'm pretty sure ending it will compromise your virus protection.

^ dude, whats with all the annoying, pointless posts within a few minutes of each other?

if you dont download, then how do you use the internet? you cant use the internet without downloading anything.

hmm internet is getting better. i got 2000 KB/sec so i guess it was just maintenance.

Internet is doing better, but now I'm having serious problems when I restart my computer.

Alright well I just actually went through and fixed the problem, and since I'd be willing to bet on there being more people with it, here is what you do. The problem happenes when you restart your computer, you get a "blue screen of death", telling you that something is doing serious harm to your computer. The good news is that my first guess was right, and uninstalling Spysweeper managed to fix the problem. Also my computer seems to be running considerably better now that it's off my system.

^ well, i never even installed spysweeper, and my internet is still slow

Slow internet was hardly the problem. The bigger problem is that it would not allow my computer to shut off while it was installed. Generally I do in fact leave my computer turned on all the itme, but I do like having the power to turn it on and off.

ahhhh my computer AND my internet is slow. worse yet, i'm getting a bunch of viruses, trojans, and pop-ups. STC told me to download something which let me bypass sophos cuz i couldn't install sophos, so now i'm using a crappy free anti-virus scan that's not recognized by STC. somebody help me =(

which free one are you using?

STC is not helpful at all. I couldn't install STCPM... and they said that it was because of spyware or viruses. Or the firewall. But it's not. I told them about problems with InstallShield... and they refused to acknowledge that. They said that I'd hafta register it for $30... or think about reformatting myself. Ugh.

I solved the problem obviously... it was because of InstallShield. I had to delete the folder in Program Files\Common Files.

That's what happened to my room mate. The STC also told her to download one of the free anti-virus programs and she kept getting viruses. She eventually took that off and I believe she went ahead and paid for Norton. And I believe that all is well now with her laptop.

ucapplicant: It's very difficult to troubleshoot a problem over the phone (especially considering the vast majority of people have no idea what they're talking about and can't explain the problem accurately). When I worked at STC, if I couldn't fix someone's problem on the phone in 5 minutes, I told them to bring it in - its just not worth wasting both people's time on the phone. And if you knew it was a problem with installshield, why did you even call STC?
I'm not trying to rip on you or anything, but most of the techs are pretty competent, and the programmers (the ones who litterally created STCPM and basically rewrote a lot of the Sophos code to make it 300% better than it was) are extremely good at what they do. If people have trouble with their computers that they or their friends can't fix, I still recommend that they take it to STC - a $30 or $15 flat charge is nothing compared to the $60/hour most other places charge.

STCPM and Sophos take up more memory than most of the games on my computer... :(

lol this is why i just installed another gig of memory

uhh...stcpm is only taking about 1 meg for me...
