Internet

How fast is georgia techs Internet?

I can’t post pictures, but this speed reading was done on campus just now:

<a href=“Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test”>Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test;

Holy cow that is fast. Is that over wifi? Also, is the Internet that fast around campus?

When I went on a tour last year, they said GT’s internet is second fastest in the country only to the Pentagon. So yeah, it’s fast.

That is over campus Wifi. I have not walked around and checked. I was just sitting on campus with a laptop, went to that website after you asked, and that was the result. I had a few other things running on the internet in the background, so it is probably actually faster.

Wow I guess that seals the deal. I’m coming to tech haha. I can’t wait till this fall.

I know you’ve already decided, but I just wanted to let you know that the speeds are similar across campus. The library definitely has the fastest wifi, but you get great internet regardless of where you are. The wired connection is even faster, and I’ve gotten 2 megabyte (not megabit) download speeds on wired before.

Sorry, forgot a 0, 20 MB/s.

My god that is fast. I could download an album in about 5 seconds with a speed like that (assuming 97/8 megabytes per second).

Haha yea I can’t wait

The REALLY fast internet at GT also has some downsides …

It spoils the students!!

Whenever my son (freshman @ GT) is home, he’s constantly complaining about the slow connection!! And I always thought our cable-connection is not really half-bad …!!! :-)

Is wifi available in the dorms also?

Yes, wifi is in the dorms, but the wired connection is faster.

Does tech have bandwith limits (can you watch lots of movies on Netflix for example)? And is it okay if I’m downloading/uploading music onto my Dropbox (not illegally)?

Tech doesn’t advertise bandwidth limits. Things like Netflix, Dropbox, Hulu, etc are no problem at all. Now if you use your computer as a server to stream movies 24/7 to thousands of people, then you might get flagged by OIT. In summary: nothing that you do for your own use will cause problems.

Even if you are flagged, as long as you’re not breaking the law, violating the GT Honor Code, or breaking the terms of service (like running a proxy server on GT’s network) then nothing will happen to you. Getting flagged just means they want to know why you’re using so much bandwidth (because it means you’re probably doing something illegal).

Will you get flagged for the occasional torrent download?

How do you know if you’re flagged?

Bump. .

They will send you an email.

What are torrents, and can you get flagged for them?
