Does anyone have any experience with internships/co-ops far away from where they live? I am interested in doing a co-op next spring and summer back to back somewhere. Im from TN and am wanting to get a way for a bit and experience somewhere that im not used to. In the fall I will be a JR in mechanical engineering with one summer of internship experience (manufacturing). I would love to get a co-op in the aerospace/defense industry or oil industry.

DD has an internship in Seattle, WA this summer (we are from NY). It has been a great experience for her and she has met students from all over the US. It will give you an opportunity to live in another part of the country and help you decide in the future if you want to relocate there or to another city. Good luck and take advantage of any opportunities you are offered!

I’m from Oregon, go to school in Indiana, and am doing an internship in Maryland right now. It’s fun to get exposure to different parts of the country. Depending on where you go to school you may lose some name recognition by leaving the region your college is in, but that just means you have to put more effort into the job search. It’s definitely possible.

Does anyone have any advice on obtaining an internship far from home? Do companies usually only give internships to students that are near their locations?
