Has anyone has any experience or success in obtaining an internship out of state, not through your school? My school has career fairs, and pretty good overall placement for that stuff, but I'd like to spend my summer in Michigan(where I'm from), instead of Missouri(where I'm at school). I just want to send my resume into places up there, but I'm worried they wont recognize my school immediately and just pitch the app? Any input/advice appreciated. Oh, Computer Engineering major.

I go where the job is.

I’m from Florida, have family in California, go to school in Colorado but interning in Kentucky.

Who cares if someone pitches your application? I guess if you don’t want to waste your time filling it out, but I’d apply to any and every job.

In my experience, every software internship I’ve applied to on my own (i.e. just going to the company’s website and emailing them or applying there) has resulted in at least an initial phone interview. So just apply and see what happens.

Don’t worry at all. They don’t care where you live as long as you’re qualified and can work in the US. I applied for an internship in Texas and I live in California. There were 3 phone interviews and I got the job. Luckily, there was an opening at a California site so I didn’t have to go to Texas after all (I plan on getting a job in CA when I graduate). But the point is that they didn’t care where I lived as long as I was willing to move for the internship, and I was.
