Internship at a Bank?

To anyone willing to share their thoughts on this, I would greatly appreciate it. I am a graduating senior this June and will be attending Binghamton’s School of Management this fall. Although I did not choose a major, I believe business is the realm in which I belong. I love problem solving and analyzing numbers (this may sound nerdy but who cares) and I am very good at it too. I am currently looking into a career in actuarial science and possibly accounting.

I was wondering whether or not I should seek an internship at a local bank this summer. Would the experience actually benefit me or should I wait until I am in college to get one? Plus, I don’t even know what an intern at a bank would do exactly. Any advice and/or personal experiences are much appreciated.

I doubt you could get one at this late date. Not sure what a local bank means, but if you mean a local bank branch, I dont think it will give you any relevant experience or enjoyment. Most interesting internships are done in college. just get a summer job and enjoy the summer. Good luck!

Thanks!

I disagree. If you can get a position at a bank this summer, do it. The competition for summer internships once you get to college is fierce and if you can boast that you’ve already done it then you’ll be ahead. Of course any summer job is better than sitting around doing nothing, but if banking is your long term goal then go for the local bank position if you can still get it.

@msquaredsmomma I’m looking to major in finance management if that makes a difference. I’m very interested in the career of an actuary.

Good for you. Go for it! One nice thing about wanting to go into actuarial science is there are a ton of internships geared specifically for future actuaries for which you may be eligible next summer 2016. Be sure to get at least a 3.2 GPA next school year. Demonstrate sustained leadership. And be sure to show you’re a strong math student. If you haven’t done this already, gather a list of several companies that hire actuaries (such as Voya Financial, Aetna, Genworth, etc) and jot down their internship application deadlines for next summer. Good luck.

@msquaredsmomma Great! I definitely will! Thanks for your help!
