So I'm going to college in the fall but I want to make use of this summer before heading off to school. I also have a part-time job so I'm looking for an internship that is also part-time (and most likely unpaid, but that doesnt matter to me). I want to be an intern at a local newspaper but I need to make a resume first--what do I include? I want to show that I'm good at English-related things and my Reading/Writing SAT I scores and Literature SAT II and AP English scores are very strong, but I don't think you're supposed to put that. Also, do I include clubs at all? Should I include a lot of volunteering in my resume? How should I write a cover letter?

tell me what you think. Will anyone be willing to hire a high school graduate w/o any experience?

by local, do you mean small town? not like, “I live in NY, so my local paper is the NYTimes”?

if it’s a small paper, I almost think you could just email them, and say you are graduating high school and would like to volunteer at the newspaper during the summer for X hours Y days per week, and ask if they would be interested. Perhaps you could include a writing sample.

Lol, I mean a very very small, local paper anything will do as long as I get some experience. What sort of writing sample? An analysis or a creative piece ??(but I probably wouldnt be given much to write anyways…). So is a resume unneeded in this case?

if it was me, I would send a short email, that says you are graduating HS and have X many hours free. Say you are interested in newspapers and would like to volunteer your time to help with anything they need. Then ask if they need anymore information (this gives them the chance to say “bring a writing sample about X” or “bring your high school grades” or “bring a resume”) and if there is a time that you could come in to talk to someone.

Perhaps you can mention how you really enjoy reading the paper every week and would love to help with it.

I don’t really think you have much to put on a resume, since you are just finishing HS. If they ask you to bring one after you send the email, you can create one, and put anything you think is relevant on it (what college you are going to go to, grades, classes, extracurriculars, leadership positions, if you held any other part time jobs, etc)
