Internship in somewhat unrelated field

Hello! So I just got great news, that I was offered an internship at sc probation, parole, and pardon services. Well I am currently majoring in political science and I plan to work for either a non profit or for the government as a foreign service officer. I was wondering if I should accept the internship offer. It isn't directly in my field but I feel as though it would be nice for me to have some sort of professional experience. Also even though it's not directly in my field of interest it is very close. I was considering volunteering with a local non profit since that's what I'm interested in and maybe I can do both?

Should I take the internship and volunteer also or just volunteer this semester?

Don’t worry so much about getting experience in non profits when applying to the foreign service… the questions asked on the personal narrative are geared more towards general working professionals than toward people with specific experience (or even toward students, for that matter).

If the internship offer you got pays, do it. Otherwise, decide which you would rather do, but recognize that having an offer is always better than not having an offer (a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush)
