Internship Oppertunities

All I hear is of NYU's fantastic internship oppertunities.

Granted, its always the NYU admission officers who boast of these oppertunities.

I realize its New York and the world is at your fingertips, BUT, what is the internship program REALLY like? I can't imagine that at SUCH a large school everyones happy?

(I'm interested in Stern/CAS<<<not sure yet.)

Thank You!

I'm not sure how accurate the businessweek rankings are, but they listed the average internship at Stern as being $1200/wk. That's pretty sick.

I believe it!
But I'm just curious how easy it is for say, mid-range students, to find those types of internships. Like, is it only the elite students who stumble upon these offers?

I don't know about CAS, but Stern will pretty much get you an internship, whether it be with on-campus recruiting or with alumni networks. And Stern requires all their internships to be paid so...

Well, it's not necessarily NYU that has the internship opportunities - it's NYC. NYU does NOT have an "internship program" like a co-op or anything. NYU DOES have CareerNet (a database of job postings by companies in the areas) and On Campus Recruiting. So, although NYU brings the companies to campus, there's not necessarily a quota of NYU students that the companies HAVE to take, so the onus is on you to actually land an internship.

That said, for Stern specifically, I'd say yes, the opportunities are pretty good. Freshman and sophomore year, it's going to be somewhat difficult finding an actual internship, but you can certainly find some kind of part-time job at a financial services firm. By junior year, I'd say that most people have had some experience or have landed a formal summer internship.

While the money is always a factor, I don't think that's necessarily a measure of how good the internship opportunity is. You could land a $25/hr+ internship at a random branch of some big financial services firm, but working in NYC at what is usually the US if not global HQ of a firm gives you a much different perspective and experience.

As for the rest of NYU, actually, the same opportunities are open. The only exceptions would be any OCR postings that require specific majors.

any comnet on CAS?

See above.. if you want to work on Wall St from CAS, it's pretty much the same deal except you might not meet the prerequisite of being an accounting major or something. As for internships in other fields, I don't really know...

Do econ majors get good internships?

how hard is it to track down an internship your freshmen or sophomore year? Also where can you go to look for one (Stern)?

Any1 have experience as an economics major in CAS?

how often do you guys have these internships and what kind of hours?
