Internships at Columbia

I'd like to learn more about student internship involvement at Columbia. I am particularly interested in interning in a television/entertainment environment. How many internships may students typically complete, must they be related to one's major, and what is the internship search process like? Any thoughts about internships at Columbia would be appreciated. Thanks!

You'll be pretty much on your own. Most people work during their summers, and not too many people do internships during the school year. It really won't be different than it would be at similar caliber schools.

I don't believe Columbia gives credit for internships, if that's what you mean when you ask if they must be related to your major and how many you may complete. A good site for you to check is the career office. They give seminars on how to find internships and how to get the most out of internships, and I'm sure there are NYC companies that list their internships with the career office. Beyond that, it's probably true that you will be pretty much on your own in terms of applying and fitting it into your schedule.

Nope, no credit for "internships." However, you can get credit for "research" or "independent study" with someone outside Columbia, if you're doing something academic and have some faculty supervision. I doubt a TV/entertainment internship will get you credit, given that you'd be doing all grunt work in such an environment (you've got to put in your dues).

Career Services isn't all that helpful. As with most things at Columbia, nobody is going to do the work for you and find you a job. You've got to put in the effort.

Sorry to hear that.

That's interesting. I wonder whether all departments allow that.</p>
