I have the opportunity to land an internship at a Law Firm for the next couple years while I'm still in high school, but how would this alter my chances for admissions to a Top B-School? (CC standards ;] )
Of course I would only do the law firm internship if I can't get an internship at Morgan Stanley or other places of the same nature.

..huh?
For instance, University or Michigan has a business program, ala Ross.
Maybe I worded my post wrong, but I’m talking about the business programs at selective colleges.
Woot, it’s 4:20…on my clock.

Maybe you’re thinking that I’m talking about an MBA?

Oh, you mean business programs…not B-schools. Cause B schools are graduate schools.

Interning at a law firm will probably boost your chances at business programs. However, the important thing is that you actually want to intern there. If you’re miserable, then what’s the point?

Of course, have some business related activities like FBLA or DECA.

FBLA and DECA are business clubs. I’ve never been in either so I don’t know too much about them. However, both participate in competitions with a variety of categories, all mainly dealing with business. There are some where you present, some written ones, and some that are test like.

That’s the point, unless someone on here is an adcom, no one will really know to what extent it will help. A lot of kids now-a-days do interns so you wouldn’t exactly be alone in that regard, but I’m sure it’d be a positive.

-G"

Ok get one thing straight you live in california not NY, all the the major US banks are HQ’d in NY (citigroup, gs, etc). Not that youd be able to land a real internship at one anyways with the entire financial sector in the pooper. Unless you know the CEO of Goldman Sachs (which my friend actually does, his dad is head of compliance) your not gonna be intenring on the trading floor as a HS student. I’ve been on the trading floor at GS and its no place for regular High School students. Now if your talking about working at a bank branch thats a diff story although its not gonna make a big dif.

Do FBLA/DECA. Their competitions are ridiculously easy in my opinion, considering I didn’t find most of the people doing it to be particularly… smart.

Uh..no **** it’s a branch. Was I supposed to clear that up in my initial post and let all of CC know specifically that it’s a branch? Judging by my location, I hoped that I didn’t need to clear that one up..but some people eh…
Now that we have that out of the way, Mike, thanks for pointing out it’s not a place for a regular HS student. If I was a “regular” HS student, would I even be thinking of something like this?
Oh, and if you’re gonna come into the thread, the very least you could do is answer the question.

My bad, but really how am i supposed to know that you were only looking to intern at a branch, the vast majority of HS students are financialy illeterate and fail simple economics test’s, i really had no idea what you were implying. I thought you wanted a real “internship” at a bank which is almost always only granted to collge students and at major offices not branches. Second of all most banks are not gonna and will not be allowed to hire a 15 year old (at least officially) as an intern so good luck on that front. Oh and one more thing by “regular” i meant someone who doesnt have serious connections. Thirdly what are you a freshman or sophmore and your freaking out about college already. Just chill out an internship alone is not gonna make or break a collge admission decision if your lacking in other areas, its just one pice of the pie. Now onto the actual question id go with the law firm as its gonna be your most viable as well as valuable option compared to similar endevours.

Haha, in no way am I financially ■■■■■■■■; I actually know quite a bit for my age. Nah, just a summer internship at a local branch, nothing big.
I’m 16 btw, so legally they can hire me for an internship, plus driving isn’t an issue since I have a car.
My uncle’s best friend is the wealth manager at Morgan Stanley, so I guess you can call that a connection. He’ll be pulling some strings for me.
Apparently in today’s market, college is SO competitive and anything can help, especially an internship. Nothing wrong with starting early right =]

I just wanna know which one would look better/be better for me down the road. Again, for example, let’s say I apply for Ross at UofM and they see that I interned for law firms while I’m applying for their B-school. Are they gonna be like w-t-f m8?
And lastly, would the law intern or the finance intern look better, or does it not matter?

Really i wouldnt worry about it, Im interning for the AFL-CIO this summer and i plan to apply to a good biz school after undergrad and get an mba sometime down the road. Do what you want to do, personally id think the law firm route would be much more exciting than the bank route. Either way your gonna be doing grunt office work but at least at the law firm you could observe in on some interesting cases. Also this is just a suggestion but you sure you wanna go pure biz for undergrad. It really doesnt matter if you have a degree in biology or astrophysics as long as you have the work experience you can get into a good biz school (graduate school wise). Also college admissions are plateauing this year, meaning this year, my year is gonna be the toughest year yet and it should ease up slightly for you.

Honestly, it doesn’t matter which one I intern for. I just want to choose the right one that will look better for admissions..and I’m still wondering which one it is lol.
