Hello CC,
For a while now, I have been looking to find a summer internship that accepts high school students. I am likely going to major in international politics or business, so anything in that area is what I hope to find. Unfortunately, a lot of the internships at embassies and other such things are for undergrads+.
Does anyone have any experience with this or can you recommend any relatively prestigious internship opportunity that you might know of?
I appreciate it.
Not your particular field of interest, but science internships seem fairly easy to come by if you are near major universities. My D is a junior this year, and last summer she had 7 weeks of research experience across two research labs. This summer he was called back to one of them (a HYPSM) for the whole summer.
Last February, she put together a cover letter that showed her real interest and understanding of the field, as well as her strong academic record. She sent these letters out to five professors at a time, across different universities (we live in Boston, so plenty of universities in the area), and waited a week. If she heard nothing back, she tried a different set of professors. By the second week, we had two professors, both who wanted her for the whole summer.
In my experience, it’s less likely to find a “relatively prestigious internship” while in high school, and it’s more likely that you’ll find something local. Try calling some firms or agencies nearby that you might be interested in. They might be willing to let you intern there even if they do not have a specific program for students.
