Hi, I was wondering if Colby has any connections to special internships (or just internships) or if they prepare graduates for a specific job? My ultimate goal is to become a physician, but I don't know if Colby is a good choice for a pre-med education. I read that only 5% of the whole student body pursue a career in medicine. Any information or insight would be wonderful. Thanks a lot.

Oh, what is Colby's academics known for? Do they produce a lot of students that go to medical/graduate school?

Last, how are their psychology and philosophy programs?

colby doesn't have an impressive bio department. bates, on the other hand, has great success sending kids to med school - i believe 90% of students from the class of 08 got in to a top med school

There seem to be some enthusiastic Bates partisans on this site but I wouldn't make a decision on which college to attend based on the uninformed opinions that are often posted. Many Colby students are pre-med majors and their med school admission rates are at least equal to those of Bates students from what I've seen. Statistical as opposed to anecdotal information should be available, though, from the two colleges as well as from medical schools.

Colby has excellent departments in government and international studies. Economics is also strong. It has the highest percentage of students studying abroad of any Nescac school. A very high percentage of students go to graduate school within 5 years. I don't know a lot about the psychology or philosophy programs but in general the academic program is very strong. In all fairness that's also true of the programs at Bates, Bowdoin and the other Nescac schools.

You never know who is posting on these sites or whether they have a clue about what they so confidently put out there so be careful where you get the information on which you base major life decisions.

Thank you for you replies. Yes, I won't let these posts dictate where I attend college in the fall, but I wanted to get a sense of what people are saying about these schools, as I have never heard of them until this year.

Another anecdote for you to consider
I work in a major academic medical center affiliated with an Ivy League Medical school
We recently hired a Colby grad--bio major --as a research assistant

SHe is helping to coordinate a very important clinical research study. She has published and presented a poster at our subspecialty medical society national meetings.

She will stay with us one more year having earned money to help her go to medical school
She will have the strong recommendations of several senior physicians at our hospital.
They are also full professors at Harvard Medical School

Not too shabby for a Colby grad I would say
