Hi,
I was wondering if there are many internship or job opportunity’s for incoming freshmen to do in either the Waltham or Boston area as a Bentley U. freshman. If not is there any advice to get my foot in the door to different firms or finacial institutions. If it matters I plan to go into a finance major.
Thanks
As a freshman, you will not really have an opportunity for a internship. There are on campus jobs you can apply for and also some in town, I’m sure. As you begin taking your core classes, internships will open up. Bentley has a huge following of companies looking for Bentley students. They will come onto campus to interview you generally. My daughter graduated from Bentley in 2014 and had many internships both in the summer and during the school year. Our son is currently a freshman there as well. My advice would be to get good grades and make good contacts with your professors, those letters of recommendation come in handy. I cannot say enough good things about Bentleys job placement. My daughter had a full time job secured (accounting) in the fall of her senior year. We didn’t hesitate when our son was accepted, we knew how valuable of an education it was! Good luck!
I agree with momtoo3. I would not worry about an internship in Freshman Year. I would suggest you put all of your effort into getting the most from your classes and establishing good relationships with professors. My son is graduating Bentley this year. He is a Finance major with an accounting and cis minor. He has excellent grades. He completed internships in soph and junior year and was offered a finance job after his junior year. Virtually all of his other Bentley friends have jobs secured as well. He established very good relations with many of his professors over the years and it added to his experience. They are completely accessible and responsive. Bentley has a fantastic career placement group, many job fairs, many on campus interview opportunities etc. I would focus on getting good grades and exploring the various clubs and other opportunities on campus. It makes a huge difference to be involved with ones you like.
Thank You Very Much
Hi, my son is totally torn between attending Bentley which was just voted #10 business school and The College of New Jersey which was voted #29 in Bloomberg Business. How is the social life at Bentley; is there a lot of school spirit? Is it easy to make friends? He is 50/50 and feels very conflicted. Any insights would be appreciated; the deadline is fast approaching.
Thanks!
I am not one for school rankings except to see the underlying rubric for any supplemental information to what I already know about a school. Certainly it is a consideration when a large percentage for the ranking is based on employer feedback. My son is a Senior and you can see from my message above he has done very well at Bentley and Bentley has done well by him. He has made a good amount of acquaintances and a small number of what he would consider extremely close friends. The “school spirit” is never going to be what you have any large university such as a UCONN for example. I believe Bentley teams are Division II except for Hockey which is Division I. He has attended a number of football games . He has gone to ice hockey and so have I and my wife which had large turnout and spirit including cowbell giveaways. Women’s basketball is well attended and I can tell you when they won the 2014 NCAA Div II championship it was fantastic. Bentley will well prepare your son for getting a job and performing depending on what his interests are and career goals. You do not indicate whether he has any particular focus at present although that can certainly change. I cannot stress enough how well Bentley prepared my son academically for his career and overall how fantastic the career placement group and staff were for the students that we experienced. We looked at the College of NJ. It appears to be about the same size. It is in Division III sports but frankly unless your son is playing on a team I do not believe it should be the defining issue for any choice. It is a state college so if you are a NJ resident I assume the tuition is quite low compared to Bentley . You do not indicate what your financial circumstances are or what package Bentley awarded if any. If you are not a NJ resident than the cost may be comparable again depending on any award. The cost of college is certainly another consideration. I would strongly suggest you visit if you have not both colleges. Only by seeing the facilities in person and speaking with other students and professors about their experiences do I believe you can an accurate assessment of whether your son would be happier at one or the other taking into consideration what his career goals are if any at present, cost etc.
