Internships through the year

Would it be uncommon for a student to get internships throughout a school year? I really only hear about coops and summer internships. I ask because I'm at uncc in Charlotte, nc and the only reason I'm here is for the downtown Charlotte internship opportunities for a computer science student. I've been not so happy as uncc this first semester but if I thought I was best off here, I would tough it out.

Some students do get internships during the year. In my freshman year, I was also unhappy with college and felt like I wasn’t taking advantage of the surrounding city as much as I hoped. I felt more fulfilled when I pursued an internship my spring semester. Perhaps you can schedule an internship once a week at a local company in Charlotte. Do you have class on Fridays or afternoons open?

My D was able to get an internship during the school year in her college town (I think it was about 10 hours a week). She found hers through the career counseling office at her college. So check with them to see if they have any leads on local companies that might have positions.

I do have Friday open and I would love to have some internships but I am only a freshman. I’ve had a pretty good first semester with a 3.81 but I feel like I just haven’t learned any skills(not that I’m even sure what an intern would do). I guess internships are just a whole new world for me.

Meh… internship can just be another name for a part time or short term job in the field you probably eventually want to work in. Just a fancy name. In order to apply for internships, you will need to make up a resume if you don’t have one. You can list any part time or paid work you did in high school or on campus. Also any volunteer work you have done. You might have more skills than you think (for example, my D volunteered at a food bank – she put down skills in sorting and organizing large quanitities of food, wrapping food pallets, and communicating with vendors). And my D played up her major, and any courses she had taken that were particularly relevant to the internship description.

Have confidence, being a freshman isn’t an issue. Especially in the computer science field – it is very much a “what have you done lately” and “what can you do for me today” type of field.

Thank you that actually helps a lot. Now I’m considering transferring so between Charlotte and Raleigh, where would my best opportunities be.
