Internships during the school year for a first year?

Hi all,

I was just wondering how common/uncommon it is for first-year's to hold internships during the school year in the city. I'm mainly interested in finance/consulting, and recently got interested in big data as well (not sure if there are many firms out there that work on this though, please do inform!) If it's do-able, what would make one stand out in the process of applying for these positions?

Thanks, guys!

Not necessary to have an internship during the school year as a first year. Worry about adjusting to college life and keeping that gpa up. Get something for the next summer (even this isnt necessary yet).

I know it’s not necessary (obviously lol…a good amount of people don’t start interning until their senior year, I’d imagine), but considering how competitive the industry is, work experience can really help an applicant stand out, when he/she is applying for that first internship the summer after his/her freshman year. So my question is: is it POSSIBLE to have an internship during the school year as a first year? are there people who do that?

And thanks for the advice on adjusting to college and keeping up the gpa – those things will definitely be my top priorities – but if I can handle all of that well, is it possible to get an internship?

Definitely possible. I’ve held two different finance-related internships downtown (at different times) during the academic year as a first year student. If scheduling works to your favor, you can definitely make it downtown and work a substantial amount of hours during the school year. I’ve been able to keep up a solid GPA the entire time as well. Getting the first internship, though, will be the most difficult part as a first year. I was really proactive about it, and got lucky with my first one. The experience I got at the first one probably made me competitive enough to land my second internship, which extends from april to the end of the summer.

Thanks for the reply!

I have two internships lined up this summer, one as a property management assistant at a big real estate firm in NYC, and another as a consultant assistant for a relatively small management consulting firm. Hopefully they will add something to my resume to help prepare me land that first internship during my first year.

Empirical, how did you find these internships? On the school’s careers website or through contacting various alumni? And are you planning to do anything this summer, if you don’t mind me asking? And one more thing…When are those “big names” going to show up, if you know what I mean – it wouldn’t be possible to land an internship at a bulge bracket bank after your first year, would it?

Jeez, you’re really ahead of the curve. You’ll be fine. Like I said, the academic-year internship I’m doing right now extends into the summer, so that’ll be my summer internship as well. I got it off the school’s career website. And if you don’t mind working wealth management to start off, the “big names” can come in your first year. My current internship is at a bulge bracket for wealth management.

niceeeeee! Thanks again and see you in September!

(@ empirical) Do you mind sharing what your first-year Internship was? What months? How many days/week? Minimum hours required?
