Internships versus co-ops

What about internships, just during the summer or break time, and not necessarily paid, but just to get job experience?

Are those available, as well as co-ops?

If I understand correctly, co-ops usually involve alternating semesters with class and work, thus extending the time in undergrad. This is how it works at some universities.

Does Bama have a program where one can do a paid or unpaid internship and not have to extend their time in school, just doing the internship in the summer, or even part-time while attending school full-time if it’s a local company?

My son only does his internship during the summer and during his Christmas break (that part is optional).

And, during the summer, he only has to work a minimum of 6 week, but can work more if he wants.

Since your son would have the NMF scholarship, he’s not really going to want to do a co-op that pays for his education thru alternating semesters. He’ll want to do an internship. He can learn about those either thru the eng’g dept or thru emails that are sent to the eng’g students.

UA is very good about accommodating the needs of its students. I also suggest checking the websites of companies your S has an interest in.

Anyone interested in summer science/research internships should start looking into them now. Check with any research facility (university, hospital, government). The national stimulus package has significant funding for summer research interns.
