Internships

Hi,
One of main criteria my child is using to evaluate shcools is good internships. He is going to be an accounting and or math major. Can anybody shed some light on interships, alumni invovlement in business and math.
Thanks.

No personal experience but I read this article the other day which might be pertinent.
[E-Net! News & Information](Elon University / Today at Elon / Career Moves: Résumé & interview prep secures internship)

I have a S in another (very connected) school who is working very hard to get an intership. At his school they do have school recruiting & postings for interships but I think the likelihood of him getting something is be very small. How many companies are bringing in 100s of college kids to work? – very, very few. Without connectios they will hire the highest GPA, who’s team captain & did service & has a with personality. tough competition.

I don’t think you can count on any U for providing connections interships. I think the most likely jobs come from your family & friend connections & hitting the pavement & offering to work for free.

That being said, on one of our Elon appts. we met 2 kids who had internships working for the University- during January term & a regular semester. Which is great. You have to rack up a lot of exeperinces over 4 years.

My D is employed on campus & the mandatory interview training & resume writing prior to her application was extenisve & excellent. Once hired, her job has lots on ongoing training & team building.

At a Elon parents weekend seminar the President said creating job recruiting was a no# 1 priority for the University. He made a direct plea to parents to hire Elon students. He’s very charismatic and the job placement # is important to the University ranking. So much so they moved the career office to the student center this year so it will have a lot of buzz about it, draw both kids & future employers.

An acquaintance I know is sending his kids to top tier NE Colleges at $50K+ b/c of potential job connections down the road. But there are no guarantees. So since my D really liked Elon, I knew she would do well which I thinkt that utlimately will carry her farther than the potential job networking with peers… Besides it leaves the door $$ open for grad school.

Just spent the weekend at Elon for Fellows Weekend and there was a lot of talk about internships. In addition to the career center being forefront of student visitor center an internship coordinator has been hired in all the schools of study, e.g. Business and communications. My son applied for a biz fellow, so we met he fellows from prior years. they have all had internships. In fact Elon encourages internships right from freshmen year and not to wait until junior. I think you will find internships a greater priority here than most schools.

Also Elon has relationships with Ernst, PAC, and Deloitte. They are sponsors of the porter career center and offer Elon students internships, so if yourbchildmis studying accounting, he will have many opportunities.

Jan pagoria is dir. Of internships in the biz school and Jane ? Helps students with career planning. Give them a call, they were very helpful to us.

Based on my daughter’s experience, I think the help with internships and related things like resumes may be the best part of Elon. She said they were super helpful and compared her experience to that of her friends in other (more prestigious) universities who did not get much help.

What is the difference between an internship and a job? Internship seems to be such a buzzword these days. Then there is the “paid internship”. How is that different from a summer job?

When we attended spring orientation earlier in the month - we went to a session on internships. The panel of students all described having several internships - one student said he had 10! But - if you help out at a business for a few weeks - is that an internship? The students did all describe getting help from Elon in locating their internships, applying for them, etc. I just think the concept is becoming overused. I struggle to understand how someone could have 10 internships that had any depth to them.

Enlighten me please!
