Internships

Do college students only intern during the summer break? Is it possible to intern during the year? I'm an international and am clueless abou internships, please explain!

It would really depend on the company you’re looking at, and how well you can manage time. Summer would be the best time to do internships because you may not have to worry about classes (or your courseload may be reduced). I really don’t know anybody who does an internship during the academic year, but I don’t see why it would be impossible.

What is your major?

Thanks! Mechanical Engineering currently

From my experience, it’s definitely doable and if anything beneficial in the long run… as long as you learn how to spend your time efficiently.

I had an unpaid internship in west LA fall quarter last year (my sophomore year) while taking 13 units. 14 hours a week. And in addition to that I was actively involved in a student group. It was really tiring, but I definitely learned a lot about time management and more efficient studying habits, which helped me a lot even after my internship was finished.

I still ended up with a 3.9 that quarter (taking 2 major prereq classes and 1 GE), and later on when I interviewed for summer programs I got to brag about how I can handle different tasks efficiently with limited amount of time.
