How good are internship opportunities at Pomona College? Also, how good is the pay?
Since nobody else has answered this, I’ll take a stab at it. I’m a Pomona parent. The first place to start getting info to answer this question is the website for the Career Development Office. https://www.pomona.edu/administration/career-development/job-internship-search. Basically there are lots of resources available but you have to take advantage of them. No one will come knocking on your door to give you a high paying internship. But the CDO is there to help you with preparing a resume, creating a LinkedIn account with a professional head shot, prepping for mock interviews, etc. There will be various recruiting fairs and information sessions which are 5C. So you can attend stuff that’s held on other campuses like CMC. Examples of employers recruiting on campus in September, or having info sessions, include Deloitte, JP Morgan, Accenture, Analysis Group, Cornerstone Research. My kid is an econ major so I focus on stuff that’s applicable to that major but I’m sure there is much more for other majors like STEM.
You will be able to log onto Handshake which is a recruiting platform, sort of like Indeed or Glassdoor but more targeted to college students and grads. Many colleges have moved to utilizing Handshake.
As a freshman or sophomore you may find it harder to find paid internships. That’s where Pomona can be very helpful with the PCIP program. https://www.pomona.edu/administration/career-development/job-internship-search/pcip. You can get a stipend to help subsidize an unpaid or low paying internship. https://www.pomona.edu/families/blog/posts/77-pomona-college-internship-program-pcip-summer-experience-awards-granted
There’s also the possibility of getting a SURP. With a SURP you can get funding to do research in the summer. https://www.pomona.edu/news/2018/08/15-students-make-most-summer-research-opportunities
How good is the pay? Based on my kid’s experience, the pay for summer internships is such that you are lucky to break even. It’s something that you are doing for resume building. Last summer my D had an internship at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City that paid $15/hour plus $1,000 for relocation expenses. Given the cost of travel to and from Kansas City and living for the summer, it was a definite negative cash flow situation but worthwhile for the experience and resume.
