For students or parents who are currently at Tulane - can you discuss internship opportunities a bit more? It’s hard to find information without needing to sign up through the portal.
Are they plentiful? Does the school seem to help you a lot? Is New Orleans a good market for opportunities? My D is deciding between Tulane and SMU, and really trying to get every piece of information possible, so she cannot seem to decide at all. Right now she is looking at Marketing, but I am sure that will change. We know SMU has amazing opportunities, and the school stresses that loud and clear. I don’t hear much from Tulane in this area except for the fact that they do exist.
Tulane mom of a freshman. Tulane has two tiers of service - so that provides some experience. My son is doing his tier one service this semester as part of one of his courses. There were 4 or 5 choices of where to do the service. My son picked a historic house where students either help with the extensive gardens or conduct research on one of the artifacts in the house. He has just completed his orientation. I don’t know what his project will be. His major is Econ with history and philosophy minors. One of the other service projects was to promote a lighthouse which could include publication of their work on the lighthouse website - which would be a good opportunity for a marketing major. I can’t remember the other opportunities. For his second tier service, he is looking toward the course with service to provide financial literacy to the New Orleans community. One of my son’s friends is a 5 year accounting BA/MA major. He has just started his 6 month internship with Ernst and Young. My son is applying to numerous think tank internships for the summer and has a phone interview next week - fingers crossed! He also made the alternate list for Resident Advisors (RA). Most of the Resident Advisors are upperclassmen. It is likely that he will get an RA spot in the spring when many of the juniors study abroad. Tulane also has a four year career development plan that is mostly student directed.
My son is quiet and introverted and he has really pushed himself to be more involved. He has enjoyed a program that brings in visiting speakers - last week he sat in on a lecture from Madeline Albright. He also is involved in a number of clubs. Tulane has been a positive experienced for my son.
Wow. Thank you so much for this information. I just wish Tulane would discuss this aspect a little more (or maybe I just didn’t see it). Good luck to your son next week! @callmom
