I visited Wake in november and had a face-to-face interview, which I was kind of looking forward to since I had already interviewed for Georgetown, Duke, and Northwestern. But when I got there, my interviewer was so...weird?

The first thing that bugged me was that he didn't write a single word down. It's not like he started to write something, realized I was hopeless, and then stopped. Right off the bat he didn't have a notebook to write in or anything, which I found odd. What was he doing, memorizing every word I said? Was I secretly being recorded by a spycam in the background? Or is it a hit or miss type of thing, where he writes "yes" if he got a good vibe from me, or "no" otherwise?

Also, when I started to answer a question, it almost seemed like he was uninterested in my answer and would just skip right to the next question the second I finished speaking. He gave zero feedback and gave me the feeling that he just wanted to get the whole thing over with. Granted there were a ton of people being interviewed that day, but come on!

Personally, I think I'm pretty good with thinking on my feet and coming up with creative answers, so I don't know what this dude's problem was.

Does anyone think I should read into this? I'm freaking out!

No, don’t read anything into it. Just relax.

Like you, I also thought my interview at Wake Forest went badly. The interviewer was very stiff and I couldn’t tell if he liked me at all because he didn’t show any interest in my answers and seemed bored the entire time. I left the interview thinking I was never going to get in. The entire experience was awkward, uncomfortable and not at all like the relaxed, fun interviews I had had at other schools.

I’m a student here now, so it apparently didn’t go as badly as I thought. From your description, you may have very well had the same stiff guy I had (I applied last year), so I’d just relax if I were you.

By any chance, was your interviewer an older man, an ex-professor? If so, I believe we’ve possibly had the same person hahahha

I would not read too much into the interview. My daughter had a great connection with the interviewer , I could hear them laughing while I sat in the waiting room. She was deferred.

@generalpolonius, thanks that’s a great relief! It definitely sounds like we had the same guy from what you’ve said. The whole time he had me wondering what I was saying that was so wrong, because he seemed so genuinely bored. But that’s good news for me if your experience was similar and you still got in!

@bigdreamer, I’m not sure if he was an ex-professor, but he was an older man haha. Did you interview this year?

I was just perusing this site because I have a daughter who may be interested in Wake when she graduates in 2012. I definitely think Wake should review the process it uses to determine who does the interviews. I have had two sons interview at Wake, both with 4 0’s and 34/35 ACT’s lots of EC’s, and they were both put off by the stiffness and seeming indifference of the interviewer (who happened to be a woman). Although both were accepted, neither one ended up attending Wake for a variety of reasons, but the interview was definitely one of the factors that helped them decide not to attend. They both echoed the sentiments expressed on this post. Wake Admissions, if you monitor this blog, you should review your interviewers because they are definitely not helping you attract students.

@a404wil: Haha I had a face-to-face interview in January. This man had been at Wake since the late 60s I believe (not sure if the man who interviewed you mentioned this). Do you remember the name of your interviewer? This man did take interest in things about me, and he didn’t cut me off that much, but he also noted that the list of ECs/accomplishments that I had submitted on the internet form was quite long hahahaha.

I don’t recall his name, just the uneasy feeling he gave me after leaving the only reason I worried so much is because a lot of people told me that admission to wake relies heavily on the interview. Hopefully this wasn’t the deal breaker for me because I really enjoyed the rest of the tour!

good luck to everyone and thank you for your feedback!

Haha I can undertstand your uneasy feelings. I figured the Wake interview mattered more than a typical alumni interviewer for other schools. Good luck :)

My D interviewed last summer - we were visiting the NC circuit of schools and thought an interview would help her get to know the campus better. No dice. Awkward and uninformative. Their loss. She’s a great kid who was offered a full ride elsewhere.

a404wil I agree with everyone about the not stressing you’ll probably be fine…but to anyone who may just be reading this and get turned off because of the “uninformative interviews” everyone has had. That is not true for every person who interviewed there. I had mine back in September and the woman was very nice and seemed to know a lot about the school. The interview worked more like a conversation and when I asked questions at the end she was able to answer them or gave me the names of people I should talk with. So bottom line…if your interview does not seem to go well don’t fret, but don’t psych yourself out because you think all interviews are going to go poorly.

My son (ED admit) had an interview last summer. It was one of the things that tipped him into applying ED. He interviewed with a retired professor also. The interview lasted about 1 1/2 hours (It was supposed to last 1/2 hour). My son said how much he liked the interview although some of the questions were a tad nerve racking. His interviewer has been wonderful. My son has stayed in contact with him all these months and has received lots of helpful information and contacts at WF from him. They are planning on meeting on Accepted Students Day. Knowing not a sole at Wake, my son feels as if he already has a friend and mentor at he school.

The interview was a great experience for my son, and I feel bad that it has been a turn off for others. There are some good interviews going on at Wake.

Forgot to add - I think that the interviews are one small piece to the admission puzzle. I would not worry too much if the interview does not go exactly as you wished. As you know with their application, they look at so many things.

Had this giant black guy who had just graduated or something and he was AWESOME… He seemed really interested in what I was saying and was very helpful. Its quite obvious that the interview experience varies considerably so its pointless to argue about whether Wake has great interviewers or not

But like tennismom said, interview is not the main thing so who really cares

I was not generalizing that all Wake interviews are negative, I was simply referring to my own, hence the title “interview gone wrong.” I’m sure there are many great interviewers there, I just didn’t get so lucky as to have one of them. I don’t particularly care at this point, I was merely asking if anyone had an opinion or similar experience.

I really don’t think it’ll be that big of a deal in the long run. Interviews can only really help you – if you have a great interview, you get brownie points … if you have an okay interview, nothing really happens I don’t think. Unless your interview went horribly wrong, I don’t think this is a cause for concern. My best interview (I still actually keep in touch with my interviewer) was for a school I was outright denied from … my (by far) worst interview was for a high-reach school that I ended up being wait listed for.

I wouldn’t look too deep into the situation I had a WONDERFUL Wake interviewer; I hope yours didn’t sway you from here! Good luck!!

My interviewer actually came to my school and arranged stuff with my counsellor…it was really early in the school year. Counsellor was like ‘Hey, WFU guy is in town, so you’re having an interview this week!’

Thanks pinkcupcake. No it definitely didn’t sway me from wake, it’s still way up there on my list!
Mudbloody, wow that is very lucky! I had to make a special trip to north carolina all the way from pennsylvania for my interview haha
