My interviewer is asking to do the interview at his house. Is this normal? I know some schools (like MIT) don’t allow any interviews to take place at either the interviewer’s or the student’s home, is it same for Yale too or do they allow it? I just don’t feel comfortable interviewing at his house.
That is strictly against our guidelines, “Interviews are not permitted in either the interviewer’s home or the applicant’s home.”
I’d politely ask if there were somewhere else convenient for you to meet.
I interview for Swarthmore and it is also very explicitly against the rules there. Maybe he’s been doing it for years and didn’t bother to read the (perhaps new) guidelines, but you are fine to request a different location. Once decisions are done in April you might also mention it to the admissions office.
It is against our guidelines. When I interviewed for Yale (almost a decade ago) I had my interview at my interviewer’s house. Maybe some older alums are just accustomed to that and haven’t read newer guidelines?
Request a coffee shop or a local library. If they say no, reach out to the admissions office.
DS is currently a senior and had his interview at the interviewer’s house. It would seem wise to no longer have this within guidelines, but I’m sure that a request to relocate would be fine. Blame it on your parents :))
What is the process of setting up interview for Yale. DS was contacted by a Harvard alumni and had his interview today
It’s pretty much the same process as Harvard. An alumnus will reach out.
I have been doing interviews since the 80’s, it was always against policy to do interviews in the home. Back in the day, it was more because it was felt the parent would hover and make the kid uncomfortable. In today’s time, I am sure there are questions of liability, etc.
