My assigned EC is 400 miles away, which seems unreasonable. I saw in the FAQ's that the interview can be waived if the EC is too far away. Do I need to specifically request a waiver? If so, how do I go about it?

Well, you might consider contacting the interviewer first – sometimes ECs have special circumstances and interview in multiple locations (for example, an EC who lives in City X might interview in City Y while he’s home for Christmas).

But if you need to have your interview waived, you should email interview at mit dot edu.

Also I believe they conduct some interviews via Skype. But yes, contact your EC first…could be anything from a mistake to what the above poster said.

Particularly internationally, the assignment computer can be occasionally ummm… idiosyncratic. Mistakes can be made, and students can be reassigned without any problems at all. I have moved dozens of students to new EC’s this year. Just contact interview@mit.edu, and things can go very smoothly from there.
Good luck.
