Interview Stay

Hi. We are going to see Barnard in a week. We are not visiting other schools in NYC at this time. Can someone recommend a hotel close to or on campus that is a reasonable price? Or a hotel near time square where we could subway to Barnard.
Thank you for your help

What do you consider “reasonable”? What kind of amenities?

Unfortunately, NYC hotel rates are extremely high. There are also a number of hostels that are more affordable, but they don’t offer the level of services and privacy that you probably expect when you stay at a hotel.

I’d note that I’ve got nothing to recommend – the places I used to stay years ago have either shut down or are now too expensive for me – all the time my d. was in school at Barnard, when I’d visit, I would stay in her dorm room.

When my d. was in high school doing college visits, she went to NY alone and was hosted by friends – either college kids in dorm rooms, or adult family friends who were willing to have a teenager stay with them for a couple of days. One reason that she she traveled alone was cost.

Depending on how much finances are a factor, you might want to consider booking outside of manhattan, opting for a hotel near the airport, and using public transit to get into the city.

I will echo much of what Calmom has said. Hotel rates anywhere in Manhattan are very high, compared to other places in the country. It just depends on your perspective. Before our d got into school, we often stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn near Times Square. My h travels a lot for business and could use “points” there for a better rate. Once she was in school, though, we usually slept in her dorm room on the floor (when she had a private room). It’s just a couple block’s walk to the subway from that hotel and you are right at the theatre district.

We took a fairly large family group up there one summer for D’s 21st B’day (she was there working in a lab all summer), and we stayed in a hotel near the Newark airport. We drove into the city, though, since we had the van there and taking public transportation would have taken a LONG time each way.

For your weekend visit, if you have never been to the City, I would recommend staying near Times Square and taking the subway up to Barnard. It is pricey but worth it: that City is like nothing else in the world. And you will be amazed at the difference in the “feel” of the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood near Times Square and the Upper West side where Barnard is.

thanks for the info. Turns out the weekend interview program just happens to be Columbus day w/e. Most of the places we have called are full. The rest of the places are outrageously high. The funny thing about it is we don’t even want her to go there. She insists on looking at the place. Maybe we can talk her out of it and just proceed to wesleyan. Too bad we already made the plane reservations

Have you tried looking in Queens near LaGuardia?

Priceline a hotel room.
Carefully select the area before you hit submit.

During our visit in August we stayed at the “Fairfield Inn By Marriott New Laguardia Airport/Long Island City” and we were very happy with it. They have a van that will take you to the closest subway stop, or you can walk to the subway in about 15 minutes. The subway ride to Times Square is about 15 minutes. Then you change lines to get to Barnard, which is another 5 to 10 minutes. We booked through a Priceline bid and it cost us $80 (plus taxes and fee) per night. They have free parking if you will be renting a car.

thank you very much

I guess plan B (well actually plan G) would be to stay at JFK at hotel for 190 and then take the LIRR and subway. We screwed up forgetting Columbus day weekend and most everything <$280-300 a night is full.

countmontecristo. Thanks for the info I looked up Fairfield Inn By Marriott but at JFK and it is $160

You might want to consider placing one or more bids at Priceline. If there are only 2 of you you could bid in all the various Manhattan areas or JFK, if that is what you prefer. But, if there are more than 2 of you you have to be careful about bidding in certain Manhattan locations as some have room capacities of only 2. I have saved substantial sums of money over the last few years by bidding at Priceline. You could also try Hotwire. I just looked and they are offering a 2 and 1/2 star room for 3 people in the JFK area next weekend for $109 per night. Also a 3 star in the same area for $134.

You might consider staying in Jersey City, NJ. The prices are WAY more reasonable, and you can take the PATH train right into the city (or drive if you prefer, but parking can be ridiculous in NYC).
