Interview with no questions asked

I recently had an interview for an engineering co-op / internship position. During the interview we talked about the company, the job, safety, the product made, the future of the company and a bunch of other things (all related to the company or job), but not once was I asked a question, nor did the interviewers take any notes (they were both engineers).

My question is this - how do you handle an interview like this? I even asked during the interview if they had any questions for me. To which they responded - "Well I can see all your experience here, what you have is pretty standard for an engineering student". So I did try. I just feel like we talked more about the company than about me and what I bring to the table.

I guess that could mean one of two things, either they wanted to hire me before they interviewed me, and just wanted to check me out, or they had no intention of hiring me and it was just a courtesy interview.

I think your last paragraph is accurate… I had an internship interview with a government agency where they didn’t ask any questions, the guy just basically told me about the position, checked to see if I was still interested, and said they would be in touch again soon.

Did you ask about how they were planning to followup or when candidates would be notified whether or not they were chosen?

Yeah, they said it’d be within the week. But probably before the weekend. It’ll just be frustrating if I don’t get an offer, since I was barely given an opportunity to convince them of my ability.

If you’re not given an offer, it might be because they’re not hiring. It’s surprisingly common for companies to recruit on campus even if they’re not hiring, particularly companies well known on campus who want to keep up the appearance that they’re doing well and still connected to campus. Also, at some universities there are more hiring companies than interview slots so companies will come to “interview” when not hiring simply to keep their place for future years.

Well I did get a job offer. So I guess they just wanted to see me in person before they extended me an opportunity.
