I have an interview with a Reed alum in my area this weekend, and I'm so nervous! I have no idea what to expect as this is my first college interview. Could anyone give me some hints as well as give me an idea of what questions to expect from this interview? I'd greatly appreciate any help!

Reed interviews are very laid back and informal. I’ve heard many stories where the conversation (conversation, not interview) has almost northing to do with academics in general or Reed in particular, but is closer to a chat you might have with a fellow geek. I honestly don’t remember the particulars of my own interview (except for having to call him to ask where he was, to which he replied, “Turn around.”). I do remember that after I got over my initial nervousness it was actually enjoyable – I never felt that I was being put on the spot.

So although it sounds trite, my advice would be to not stress over it and just be yourself. The interview isn’t about your test scores and so on – the admissions dept. will be getting those directly – I suspect it’s more about whether or not the interviewer thinks you’re a Reedie.

Whatever you do, don’t be pretentious. (Is this mutually exclusive with being a Reedie? Heh.) If you’re sincerely excited about Plato’s Republic and the topic emerges naturally in your conversation, then fine. But don’t force it. Pretentious people are not fun to have in Hum 110 conference.

Other then that, know why you’re applying to Reed, and use the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about life at Reed which aren’t answered in the college brochure or website.
