So I just got contacted for an interview. I don't want to turn it down, but I don't really want to do it either. I'm usually a little bit shy when I first meet someone new, and I don't really like to talk about myself a whole lot. Would it hurt me to kindly reply that I don't wish to be interviewed?

Unless it is impossible for you to make the interview, I would recommend you go. You are trying to enroll in a college. There will be courses where you will be required to speak. You are going to meet new people in your dorms. You’ll need to talk to them as well.

Ehh that’s a little different though. I’ll be fine with kids my age.

My interviewer was extremely nice, and I really enjoyed our talk. We met at a coffee shop so it was relaxed. The interviewers know you’re nervous, and they are all volunteers so they like students and are proud their school. It shouldn’t be a stress-out situation. It will do you more harm not to interview than to be awkward in an interview - hey, you’re a kid!! About the only thing that could blow it is saying something like, “I only applied here because my dad is making me” or “I really wanted to go to Stanford but couldn’t get in.”

My son is also pretty shy. He interviewed a couple of weeks ago, and was very happy with how the interview went. I would definitely urge you to take the opportunity to interview. It may go much better than you anticipate, but not interviewing is probably a red flag to the university. What’s more, as a shy student, the more experience you get now interviewing, the easier it will be in a few years time when you’ll have no choice and the interview will be more crucial. Go for it, and good luck!

Yeah I decided to interview. I’m not overly shy, I’m just a bit afraid that it’ll do more harm than good for some reason. Thanks for the responses!

Btw, will the interviewer have read my app before she interviews me?

No. He/she will know if you applied to Trinity or Pratt, your ethnicity, your high school, and your academic interests (i.e. intended major(s)). They’ll know nothing else about your application. They want the interviewers to form as unbiased an opinion as possible. The interview usually isn’t a make or break thing…so just relax, enjoy, do your best, and learn more about Duke.

My interview is tomorrow - I’m a little nervous too, but don’t worry idk, most applicants are. You’ll do well, I’m sure :)

Any tips from duke students/parents as to why Duke is the best college to attend? I have a list of reasons but if anyone has anything to add, I’d love to hear!

Alumni interview is one of the most informal and less stressful interviews ever, at least compared to scholarship interviews. You should really enjoy it! Have fun.

I just had mine a few days ago, and it was really relaxed. The people who do it tend to be super sweet - you may hear interview horror stories, but those are by far the exception, rather than the norm. Good luck!

I had an interview a few weeks ago and I actually really enjoyed it. I went in expecting to spend an hour awkwardly trying to talk about myself, but the interviewers (a man and his wife who also went to Duke) were both really friendly and were happy to talk about basically anything. You’d have to try pretty hard to blow the interview, so just find a free weekend and plan it. In fact, it’s likely that you’ll leave the interview even more interested in Duke than you were beforehand.

For you people who have had interviews: where do you live? I sent my application late November and didn’t get contacted or anything for an interview and it just makes me really worried and upset…

^ I live in the Mid-Atlantic area and I had my interview yesterday. Don’t worry about not getting interviws, because there is no way that you will get hurt if you don’t get it at all. Perhaps there are a lot of people who got in with out it.

On another thread I think someone talked about filing out an ‘interview request form’. Yikes. I didn’t know there was a request form to fill out. But applied in midNovember and still haven’t heard a word about an interview. Getting concerned since I really wanted an interview.
