Interviews

I dont think Stanford, MIT, or Cornell required them

.. I'm not sure about Harvard (or Yale)... I couldnt find it on the website.. but if it is.. I'm guessint it's too late.

Can interviews be done over the phone? I'm applying to some schools that are kind of far, and I won't have an opportunity to visit until after admission decision letters roll in.

I think colleges ask for alumni volunteers for interviews around the country. I live in Oregon and a representative from columbia contacted me to set up an interview.
So i think theyll set up an interview for you

So what about the deadline and requirement of the interview for Harvard

still in question...

harvard is optional. http://www.admissions.college.harvard.edu/parents/visit/index.html
click on "have an interview w/ a member of our staff."

"optional"
but without an interview, they have a 6% acceptance rate

Thanks... now does it say anywhere if it's too late (deadline to request).. how do I request if not?

Harvard's interviews with an alumnus or alumna are NOT optional; they are required and automatic. The interviewer will contact you; you don't have to start it yourself. But if by chance you don't get interviewed (highly unlikely), then it doesn't count against you.
P.S. I've been an alumna interviewer for Harvard for 15 years.

I didn't get an interview for Yale. They sent me a letter apologizing and informing me that they were unable to provide me with one. Hooooooopefully it won't be held too much against me. It's sad, because I was really counting on the interview to help me a bit, because I engage very well with adults and am extremely articulate/well-spoken and...well, I'd LIKE to think charming. ;) Haha, aww. Oh well.

Don't worry, gavroche. These qualities should come out in your rec letters.

@mom555

What if youre an international?
Do I have to start it myself? and contact the interviewer

She's right. I applied EA (Nov. 1 deadline) and had my interview around the 11th. Harvard does require an interview for all applicants, but like mom555 said, they contact you, not vice versa. And for internationals, the very last thing on the application asks if you would like an interview and then details about it, so I would guess that it is optional for internationals.

Deference, I don't know about internationals. My guess would be that if they can interview you, they'll contact you, and if they don't contact you it's because they can't, and it wouldn't count against you. But it's just a guess, so contact the admissions office to be sure. Also, I'd like to modify something I said: although an alumnus/a interview is required and automatic at least in the U.S., it's possible that if you live in a very remote area without alumni, they might not be able to interview you, but that would NOT be held against you.

The subject has been discussed a lot on CC's Harvard board. Just use the CC archives.
