What are Pomona admissions interviews like? How much are they considered during the admissions process?

It will depend on who does the interviewing. My D interviewed with a student over the summer. She asked her a lot of questions about her HS classes. (A different interviewer may ask different questions.) My D didn’t feel it went well, but she was still admitted, so I don’t think they carry much weight in admissions. Lots of students are not able to get to campus to interview.

Interviewed pretty recently with a current student. Really informal (in a good way), relaxed, and conversational. I’m not sure how much weight they carry, but I’m assuming it helps to show interest, especially with a smaller school where that data is readily accessible. My best advice would be to relax and let your personality shine through. Get to admissions early, come with prepared questions, dress appropriately, and be sure to thank your interviewer and get his/her card at the end. I was so nervous for mine and it ended up being surprisingly enjoyable. Rest assured that interviews will rarely hurt you – you’d have to say/do something exceptionally negative. Just be yourself! Best of luck!

Interviews show interest, but generally any application that shows effort shows interest. If you are socially awkward or a psychopath, interviews can hurt. (That sounds strange but it’s true. If you are a psychopath, please do not apply.) My D interviewed with a member of the BOT, so it might have actually helped.

What’s BOT? The only thing I can come up with is board of trade.

I think BOT is Board of Trustees. My D interviewed with a senior student.

Board of Trustees.

Oh. Impressive. I’m curious how she managed to get that interview?

Most likely, the trustee was an alum interviewer and happened to live in the applicant’s area.
