Interviews

How many/which schools have an interview component to their audition? What does the interview comprise of?

The one question that was asked that my daughter was not prepared for was “What other plays has the author of your monologue written?”

I would say most schools do, whether it be formal or informal. A lot of schools may ask you a question or two while you’re in the audition room, right after you finish performing your pieces. And it may be so informal that you don’t actually realize it’s an interview. Simple questions like “Why do you want to go to this school?” or even “Do you have any questions?” could be your interview. Really in those situations they just want to hear you talk with them and see a little bit of YOU. They don’t want to scare you or put more pressure on you, they just want to hold a small conversation with you as a person.

In formal interviews, the time you are in the room varies from school to school, you’ll need to check the website to see if it mentions an interview or not. (Even if it does not mention an interview, be prepared for informal questions in the audition room, because most all schools will do that, especially if they don’t have formal interviews.) There will probably just be more in-depth questions about why you chose this major, why you want to go to that particular school, what other interests you have. They will just want to get to know YOU in a longer and more in-depth way.

You really just need to check the websites of the schools you are interested in and see if an interview is part of the process for MT. (Don’t get confused. In a lot of the drama department websites the header will read “Auditions and Interviews”. That doesn’t necessarily mean that MT has an interview. It may show audition requirements for Acting, MT, VP, etc and then have interview requirements for other majors such as Directing, Dramaturgy, etc. So read up!)

Good luck on this process and be YOU!
