Intramurals and more at ND

Hey, one of the things I love about ND is its intramurals program. I mean theres just so much to do and choose from.

1.) a.) Well, I was wondering when I come to ND in the fall, if I do something like Interhall Soccer or play Baseball, what is the time committment? Are there just simply games like twice a week? I mean as a premed, I don't wanna focus too much in varisty sports as I did in high school.

b.) What about for men's baseball intramural...is there a tryout and stuff or do you just organize a team. I was a bit worried that it is ultracompetitive?

2.) Also, how are those instruction classes for like Dance (Latin, Salsa Dancing..?) and Tennis instruction?

3.) ND has the biggest 5 vs. 5 Basketball Tourney in the spring...does like every guy compete?

4.) Whats the deal with Bengal Bouts...is this ND's premier Boxing club? It seems like something I wanna get into because I don't know too much about boxing but it seems something that will get me really fit and Rocky-like. Can you be a beginner and learn?

5.) How are the gyms there? How many athletic centers are there? Can you just train anytime? Do you get intimidated if big guys like Brady Quinn is lifting like 200 lbs more than you in the gym?

Hey thanks a lot guys. I just sent my deposit yesterday and I've been getting psyched for what I plan on doing at ND this year.

Any answers?

I can answer a few of those, ill be going to ND in the fall too. Actually, Im wondering about Bengal bouts and intramurals too. In terms of athletic centers.... my friends and i were wandering around campus exploring and we stumbled upon the place where the varsity sports people actually practice. its this giant room with tons of ginormous machines, many of which i would have absolutely no idea how to use, and quite a few squat machines lol. there are actually 2 main gyms for us regular people to use, as well as small, basic weight rooms in some of the dorms.

Everyone else is busy as well so I don't think you have much to worry about, it will not be too big of a time commitment. Bengal Bouts may be a bit different honestly, that does take a lot of time, but all the guys I have known who have done it have loved it...you just really have to want it. The other sports aren't all that bad though, I think you will be able to find plenty of time for them if you want to do them.

Do you mean bookstore basketball or just plain intramurals. I haven't done intramural basketball (done some intradorm basketball though) and usually you just come if you can and it doesn't matter how good you are. If you are representing your dorm, there may be tryouts. For bookstore basketball you form your own teams.

2.) Also, how are those instruction classes for like Dance (Latin, Salsa Dancing..?) and Tennis instruction?

I was a transfer and hence exempt from gym so I have no idea, sorry.

3.) ND has the biggest 5 vs. 5 Basketball Tourney in the spring...does like every guy compete?

I don't because I suck at basketball but I would say a good number do. Not everyone for sure, maybe half? If you want to play you can get on a team, no matter how bad you are. I just would rather watch

YES, as far as I know you can start with any level of experience just as long as you aren't pro (which is why Zibby can't do it). I may be wrong on this but I am pretty sure that is the case. They will teach you and you will be pretty good by the time the bouts come around but it is a lot of work!

5.) How are the gyms there? How many athletic centers are there?

They are pretty good. There are two that students can use and I have no problem with them other than I don't go as often as I should. It can be intimidating at times, especially when it is a girl that is lifting that much more than you (which happens sometimes, not to be sexist, but it does make you want to go for the 35 pound weights instead of your 25s). Really though, it isn't much of a problem becuase you have people of all levels in there. You will get used to it and as you get stronger perhaps you will be one of those that is lifting massive amounts of weight.

Sorry I don't have more experience with all of this but I hope that helps. I just have about as much athletic ability as Rudy!

Well, I mean, I meant to ND's rec website and it regarding intramuarls, it mentioned how teams are organized- as in you and your fellow dormmates get about 10 other people and then pay like a 50 dollar fee and your team is in. I mean, my question is, are there practices or just like two games a week. I mean colleges have a different athletics style than high school.

By the way, would it be weird if I waited until senior year to do Bengal bouts because I feel that I would ge so exhausted as a premed.

Also, when I meant instrutctional classes, I did not mean "phys ed" but rather like those classes where you pay $40 for the semseter and attend during the night. ND has golf, tennis, scuba diving, dance, instructional classes. I wanted to know your opinon on those.

I have no idea on those specifics so I will bump it to Nemo to see what he thinks.

for the interhall sports it varies depending on the teams individual level of interest. In the case of things like interhall hockey, I know our dorms team never practiced, hell they were lucky to show up to a game....some of the other "sports" like interhall horseshoes, umm well not a whole lot of practicing goes on.

Now things like the interhall football team, baseball, soccer...these often do practice. But it is up to the team captains to set up the practice time for the team. Most sports do practice, but not every player bothers to make it to these informal practices...Hell I know for a fact the women's lacrosse championship match was decided by a forfeit...

Does anyone know anything about Intramural or Club Cross Country???

most dorms participate, most of the guys train by running on their own time...apparently we even have interhall meets, as I understand it the course is laid out on the 9 hole golf course (on campus) so it is basically flat...
