I am very new in college research so please correct me if I make any mistakes… I am an international IB student considering applying to Brown in early decision, and I’m planning to study history. However recently I am thinking to also be on a pre-med programme, but I feel like my background in sciences is not that strong to get college credit so I’m assuming I need to take many Intro Sciences classes in Brown. How are they though, are they taught by Teaching assistants, are professors available, approximately how many students in sciences 101 classes…

Really? You should read a little about the colleges before asking questions that are totally basic. Get a guidebook, like Fiske or something. It is so clear that you don’t know the first most basic and famous thing about Brown, so to apply ED would be ridiculous. Tell us why you are thinking about Brown ED? Do you think it will be easy to get in compared to other Ivy’s or something?

No, I don’t think that. Actually honestly, I don’t care that much about Brown being an Ivy, (I am also looking into Vassar, Grinell, Kenyon) but I just like the chance of being able to designate my studies in Brown, the open curriculum is really appealing to me, and they offer a strong history and a good pre-med programme. I will have to take many intro sciences to be good med school candidate, and I want to particularly know more about how these science classes are.

I’m sorry,.it seemed like you didn’t know anything about the open curriculum because you said ‘I’m assuming I need to take many Intro Sciences classes’ and under the open curriculum you will not have to take any sciences classes if you really don’t want to. But of course someone planning to apply to medical school will have to.

Be sure to use SEARCH to find past discussion on intro science class size.

The intro courses might be around 100-200, maybe someone else will know more recent info. But those will have smaller lab sections. The classes are not taught by TA’s, TA’s do not teach classes at Brown, but TA’s might run the lab sections. You have a chance to test out of the most basic remedial chem class 0100 and you can take a free online class to help you, so you would go into the required beginning sequence 0330. You will have your professor and your TA available for resources, profs are generally easy to access.

Thanks BrownParent!

A selection of intro science classes:
BIOL0200 (Intro bio): big, but breaks up into sections. Famous professor teaches lectures.
CHEM0330 (Intro gen chem): 2 large sections, but labs are smaller and taught by grad students.
CHEM0350-360 (orgo): 2 large sections, smaller labs (grad students). Undergrad TAs lead problem sessions.

I’ve never had a TA teach a class, only lead labs or problem sessions. The biggest may be 250 people, but that’d be quite large.
