Has anyone taken this class? How is it in difficulty and who are the teachers that generally teach it? Thanks. :)

I'm biased since I had a terrible professor (he's no longer at Duke), but it's a class I regret taking. I took 43S which had less than 10 people, which I normally find cool (some Intro to Philosophies have different numbers and up to 35 kids in the class) but my professor was just v. awful. I thought it was a ton of work, especially a lot of busy work, and it was too broad to be interesting. While we were exposed to a lot of different philosophers, we had to move so quickly to cover everything that we couldn't really stay on something (and of course, the things we went quickest on, were the readings/philosophers I liked best all semester). I've heard that some professors (sorry, don't have names) are chill and a lot of fun, and not too hard, but mine was unfairly difficult-- especially when you'd compare our syllabus to that of other sections, and our exams compared with that of other sections. I know that if you're thinking of a philosophy major, definitely take this class, but otherwise, I'd recommend any different philosophy seminar without prerequisites (since this usually is it); it's the advice I heard after add drop ended!

hmm thats a bit discouraging. I'm definitely not going to be a philosophy major. i originally got a first year cultural anthro couse which i am more interested in, but unfortunately i forgot to sign up for a chem lab along with my chem lecture, so i had to cut the seminar class to make room for the few remaining labs left. anyways its either this one or cult anth: the invention of ethnography with william o'barr? any other comments?

I know this is random, but I really wanted to take that cultural anthropology seminar but it was full by the time I registered. If you haven't dropped it already, will you let me know as soon as you do so I can grab your spot? I'd appreciate it so much!

Hey DukeRose,
I think your talking about the Freshmen Cultural Anthropology Seminar that I was originally in. I dropped that a few days before I started this post because I knew I had to drop it no matter what because that was the only way to make room for the lab. A few minutes later it looked like someone already took my spot. Sorry. :( Any other comments about the topic of this thread is greatly appreciated!

ok thanks anyways!

william o'barr is AWESOME. take the class. i've only taken an advertising seminar with him (in cul anth department) and i thought he was really really cool.
