Investment Banking

Which ibanks pay the most (for TRADING)?

I know Goldman Sachs obviously, but who else?

dude that depends a lot on the product you're trading, what's hot right now, etc.

it's much more based on your individual performance than a set payscale.

Morgan Stanley pays well, as well of Lazard (they work you hard though). Merrill Lynch pays the lowest among the BBs, I think.

Compensation shouldn't be a big factor in choosing what investment bank to work for, they all pay relativelys well, and the differences are not big at all. Each firm has its own culture. For example, GS has a lot of the relatively "geekish" math type people, while Lazard employees are very goodlooking and have expensive taste for their suits. CSFB and several other firms emphasized on "fit" in their brochures. You should should a firm based on fit.

hi everyone, i am a soph. at Ohio State (fisher), cances of making it to the BBs look bleak here. I have a 3.9 , but since I am a soph already i cant wait for next fall. Any suggestions on colleges that have an intake in spring. Cornell does, but i don't think i can make it to an ivy. Are there any other target schools that have an intake in Fall. Please help!!

OSU_IB,

The deadline for Fall Transfers to most schools is in February... so you've missed that by a lot. Some schools let Transfers in during spring though. IU does that:

what do you mean when you say Lazard works you hard? Are you trying to say the ones at Goldman don't, All investment bankers work their ass off. Do Lazard employees work 24/7 or something.

Lazard works you HARD. Goldman works you hard.

I think you get it.

What are typical Lazard hours vs. typical Goldman hours?
How much better is the pay at Lazard vs. Goldman?
Would it be accurate to say that Lazard bankers work like 100-110 hours vs. Goldman bankers' 80-90 hours?
For pay would it be safe to say Lazard bankers make closer to $120k vs. Goldman bankers that make close to $100k??

I don't know what typical lazard hours are, but Jessica Kennedy from Wharton had to pull a 140 hour week over there during her summer internship. Both Goldman and Lazard work their employees extremely hard, pay is top notch. It's just that for some people Lazard is the better deal compared to Goldman unless you get a top group at GS like TMT.

Plus, there are definite benefits to working at Lazard IMO, mainly the fact that you can be a generalist so you gain experience with a variety of industries versus GS where you're put into industry groups so you have to focus on that one specific group.

do they make only about 100K a year? in Ibanking? is that right after college or what?

100K or a bit more, and yes. that's their first year out of college. I believe that each year afterwards there's a 20k+ pay raise.

Is that a base salary excluding bonus? if then, how much would the bonus be a year?

no, that salary is with bonus. 1st year analyst is 65K Base + Bonus which ends up hitting 100-120k in TOTAL COMP

what about post ibanking? Lets say you plan to leave your ibank after a couple years experience as an associate/VP and try to get into PE/hedge funds or something. Which company will provide a better experience, better future opportunities in the long run. Basically what would look better on a resume, working as an Investment banker at Goldman or a banker at Lazard or Morgan.

Lazard (or even Greenhill, Evercore, other elite boutiques) would win hands down unless you were in GS TMT or MS Sponsors/M&A, even then I'd say it'd be hard to turn Lazard down.

boner lazard boner

look at how few schools lazard recruits from...

Yeah, they're pretty picky. if your school is not on the list you pretty much have no chance -- they give that option to e-mail your resume but from what i've heard, no one gets hired that way.

god I want to be an investment banker (no sarcasm seriously)

jeez keep your pants on
