I just received an email inviting me to apply to the LSA Honors Program. I read somewhere on this forum that to secure an invitation, you have to write to the LSA admissions office. But since I received this email, I can forego this procedure and apply straightaway -- can anyone confirm this?

Yes, you are correct. Just submit your application/essay and you will be all set.

Thanks, SBDad. Is your student at U of M?

Yes, in the honors program.

yeah i got this email too. interesting. few than 1 in 11 students get in? that's intense haha

Proud08er, I'm guessing that the "11" takes into consideration the entire LSA population, including the many students who don't get the invite or ask for one. The admit rate for Honors is probably much higher than 9.1%.

that'd make a lot more sense. thanks for the clarification haha

I too got this email inviting into honors college. But, have to write another dreadful essay. :(

Topics are not that easy either.

does any1 know if admission to the honors college interferes with the ross business school?

No it doesn't. In fact, honors students have very high admit rates into bschool. Whether that's b/c of honors or b/c they're smart to begin with I cannot say.

So that email... I got one to write an essay but my boyfriend who is currently at Michigan was invited into the Honors program and never had to write an essay. Should I write the essay or are there invitations like his just not extended yet?

AMD, I'm going to disagree -- these essay topics rock! They're definitely more thought-provoking than the generic ones for admissions. I'm having fun trying to select a date for prompt 1. Hmm, maybe June 2007, when I should have started writing my college essays...as opposed to the reality that was mid-October.

Did you receive your invitation prior to being admitted into the university?

They've changed the system in the past year or two. Three years ago, you were either automatically admitted, or you had to send an e-mail asking to be considered. Nobody had to write an essay no matter what their situation was. I think now there aren't as many automatic acceptances (maybe they just have automatic "invitations"), and people who aren't automatically accepted have to write the essay.

Did anyone get accepted without an additional essay this time? I doubt it.

Doubledian:

"Did you receive your invitation prior to being admitted into the university?"

I assume you asked me that question. Yes of course. Without being admitted, you wont get invited into honors.

I didn't apply to the honors program last year because I didn't want to write an extra essay. A few days before May 1st, I received a letter saying that I was accepted into the LSA Honors Program (I was also a Preferred Admit to Ross). Good thing I never bothered to write the extra essay.

But, Cornell also accepted me and I chose to go to Cornell..which is where I am now and I cannot regret my decision.
