My daughter got an e mail inviting her to apply to the Honors College at Cal Poly Pomona but she can’t find a letter of admission. She got in, right?
CPP always sends invites for the Honors college before the official school acceptance. Based on past experience, I am 99.9% sure she will be admitted. I do remember one poster a few years back that was invited to apply for the Honor’s college but never received an acceptance. Congrats to your daughter.
Thanks. Her EI is 4460. GPA 4.1 W; 1220 SAT, in state, lot local (norcal)
Both son’s received their Honors college email about 2 weeks prior to their school acceptance. Also be on the look out for the Showcase of Excellence email from CPP for top applicants. Again this came before their official acceptance and my son’s were local.
My DD received that email as well today. Crossing fingers that it is a good sign. She received the same one from Sac State in mid-December - but no further updates.
My daughter must be a bit behind yours, Socalmomof4! She just got her invitation to apply to the Honors Program last night. But it was a relief. She was pretty sure she would get into Pomona, but this gives her a lot more confidence.
Re the Honors Program email, is this what everyone received?
“Thank you for submitting an application to Cal Poly Pomona. University records show you expressed interest in Cal Poly Pomona’s Kellogg Honors College (KHC) during the application process. The KHC is a community of high achieving and highly motivated students at Cal Poly Pomona. Our services include honors courses, community service, academic research, professional and academic conferences, cultural events, honors freshman housing community, and more. You can learn about the KHC at http://www.cpp.edu/~honorscollege/about.shtml. The KHC freshman application is available now, with a closing date of February 15. Questions about the application process and the application are available at http://www.cpp.edu/~honorscollege/future-students/freshman-application.shtml. The application requires submission of four essay responses and a teacher reference (not letter). We hope you apply to the Kellogg Honors College. Please direct any questions or comments to honorscollege@cpp.edu or 909-869-3209. Have a good day.”
Do you think they send this to everyone who simply checked a box showing interest in the KHC or is this email REALLY an indication that someone will eventually get in? A couple of years ago, my daughter got a similar email and then was later accepted. However, I think most people who check the box have high stats (my daughter did) so I think this might be a matter of self-selection, rather than an actual preliminary review by CPP. My son has a very high SAT, but comparatively mediocre grades. He checked the KHC box. Thoughts?
@OCDDad You may be right. I was thinking that too at the beginning of the email. But at the end they say that they hope the student applies. Maybe I’m just naive, but I would think that they only send it to students who have a shot of being accepted.
Regardless, my daughter just got the invitation to the Showcase of Excellence, so I think her chances are pretty good! Like your son, OCDad, her GPA isn’t the best (she has some Bs, so it’s below 4) but her ACT score was extremely good. But overall, her eligibility index is quite high. Since officially that’s what they go by for acceptances, I would think that they have a EI cutoff for the Honors College applications as well…?
@Mom2Engineers Was the Showcase of Excellence invite sent via email or snail mail? I would think that is a good indicator of an upcoming admission. I just checked old emails and my daughter received her CPP acceptance on 2/5 (that was the date of the email, the portal could have been slightly earlier).
It was sent by email. My daughter got the email inviting her to apply to the honors college yesterday, and the invitation to the Showcase of Excellence this morning. I agree that it’s a strong indication of acceptance. If you look at the website advertising the Showcase of Excellence, it seems like the purpose of the event is to ‘sell’ Pomona to the students before they start receiving acceptances to other schools. Regardless, it sounds like a good way to understand what the Honors College offers. We’re reasonably certain that my daughter will go to Pomona (it’s her third choice, but the top 2 are stretch schools) so it seems like a more in-depth way to check out the school.
@Mom2Engineers - I Googled the Showcase. Yeah - an invite to that is about as close to an acceptance letter as a personal letter signed by the Dean. She’s in.
I certainly hope so! It’s a big relief to my daughter’s mind that she ‘got in’.
Be aware that the selection processes for Kellogg HC and CPP are separate. Not a very common occurance, but it is possible to be accepted into the honors program but not the university. Don’t want to make you nervous, but just thought you should know there is the remote possibility.

@Mom2Engineers My son thinks he wants a school where he can move back home after freshman year, so CPP is just below UCI on his list. I’m really hoping he gets an invite to the showcase. Is it just for engineers? He chose computer science, if that matters at all.
@CopperlineX2 I think the showcase is for all disciplines. IIRC, the OP’s daughter is in animal science. The Honors College is for all disciplines, so I’m pretty sure the showcase is too.
@MelloG thanks for the reminder. We do understand that this isn’t a guarantee of admission, but it does make my daughter feel as if her chances are extremely good. Her EI is pretty high, so we’re hoping that it is enough for engineering (which I know is a tough admit).
@Mom2Engineers I think she could already feel her chances were good I just put the link out there as a reminder for others who might stumble across this thread.
@CopperlineX2 I can now confirm that the Showcase of Excellence is for multiple disciplines. Today my daughter got an email from the engineering department which stated that the engineering students attending the showcase would be broken out at lunchtime for special engineering presentations.
I applied to Cal Poly Pomona this year! I do remember that in the application process there was an option to join the Kellogg Honors College if admitted (I of course stated my interest at joining as a Freshman and I had to fill out certain fields w/ information). This is why the email says that the applicant has “expressed interest” in the KHC because they most likely did so in the application. So I’m thinking that while the applicants chances are super good, it may also be because they expressed interest and the KHC is a follow up email to that request.
@Mom2Engineers I inquired about the Showcase of Excellence. Invites were sent out by GPA and test scores. I thought his 4.3 was great but the 1350 SAT and 30 ACT were too low for an invite from CS major. Bummer because he really likes this school, and many just use it as a safety.
I’m sorry to hear that, @CopperlineX2 . FWIW, I don’t think this has a specific impact on the Honors College Application. Make sure your son applies and writes some good essays!
