I have (so far) gotten into University of Iowa and University of Wisconsin. I applied to a number of other schools, many private, so I won't know for a long time. However, audition anxiety which is a whole 'nother issue is a HUGE problem for me, so I was wondering if it wouldn't be a bad idea to put down a housing payment at one of these schools. If I end up going to one of them, I wouldn't want to be scrambling for a dorm. Money isn't much of a problem for my family so they wouldn't find it excessive.

I know Iowa's facilities have been kind of iffy because of flooding, and I like Wisconsin better as a school. However, I do have some interest in music therapy on a graduate level, which Iowa offers. Any suggestions? I'm not exactly married to either of these schools, just wondering.

My D did her undergrad at Iowa (pre and post flood). Her advice, if you have any interest in speech pathology, then consider Iowa for undergrad; if Music Therapy is your potential interest, then go to the school where you feel the greatest “fit.” With either Iowa or WIS, I would definitely advise you to put in a housing deposit if your family funds permit it. If I recall, Iowa’s housing deposit is between $120-200.

If you think you might be interested in music therapy at the graduate level, it won’t matter much where you do your undergrad. What instrument do you play?

Do you live or eventually want to live in Iowa or Wisconsin? It’s usually better to do a music education degree in your intended home state because of the teacher certification process.

I had dorm deposits at 3 schools for S. I went to Iowa and remember people living in the lounges until people dropped out and they could get a dorm room. I did not want that to happen to S. The deposits are refundable anyway if you let them know by May 1st (don’t quote me on that date)
