@insidewires You can reach me at info@myivyeducation.org - it’s my pleasure!
Does anybody know if not being from the US affects your chances??
@5toryt3ll3r I’m sorry I didn’t respond to your message - I’m pretty much broke for now, I hope you understand <3
the website just says typed and double spaced – i can make stuff like pt11 font right? doesnt have to be times new roman 12?
@insidewires hey! I’m applying too and I’d love to give you some feedback on your portfolio. I can share my email if you want.
@5toryt3ll3r do you know if applying to one session over the other affects your chances of getting in?
@insidewires No worries! Check your email Also, so long as you’re able to physically get to the program and work through all the logistics, not being in the US shouldn’t be a concern. There are definitely international kids who got to Iowa!
@esruc1srenniw In my year at least, they accepted 144 students - 72 for each session. Since it’s the same amount each time, there shouldn’t be much disparity with applying. I guess I can imagine in different years maybe some more students might apply for one session or another, but it really shouldn’t be too big of a difference. Don’t worry - you guys have the agency here to make your portfolios and personal statements as strong as possible, and so long as you know you’re sending in strong work, that’s what’ll get you in
Would anyone want to review each other’s portfolio and personal statement? I just finished mine and would love to exchange feedback so PM me if you’d like to
To previous alumni of IYWS, is it better to choose only one genre you are interested in applying for? I’m interested in both fiction and poetry, and the application allows you to choose more than one genre, but I’m not sure if choosing only one or two would hurt/help me in the selection process.
@WinonaCrest I applied for both fiction and poetry and included samples of each in my application! It definitely doesn’t hurt the process; it might even help it since if you aren’t accepted for one you might be for the other.
@5storyt3ll3r Is it possible to get into both the fiction and poetry sections?
Also thank you so much for answering all my (sometimes stupid) questions, you’ve helped me so much in this stressful process <3
ughhhhh i’m SO nervous you guys. i just applied last night and !!!
i was wondering how much the transcript would affect my shot? like, they’re not devastating but they’re not stellar either. i have mostly a mixture of a’s and b’s, and i had a c+ sophomore year. would this hurt my chances?
i’m PRAYING to get in. i went to the belin blank summer writing residency at the uni of iowa last summer, and it was AMAZING. it was the first year of the program, and we stayed at burge hall and had similar activities as the young writer’s studio.
also watched your video! thank you for your insight! and wow, columbia university is amazing! congratulations!!
@wistfulwords oof hi! i applied last night. i’d love feedback on my work as well as provide some insight on yours!!
@esruc1srenniw hi!! i’m applying this year as well. i’d love to share my work with you for some feedback!!
@insidewires You’re so welcome! It’s really my pleasure You can’t do just fiction and poetry, but you can do either one or the other or their general Creative Writing survey, which includes fiction, poetry, and nonfiction.
@antaerctic Thank you so much!! I really hope you get in! The C+ might raise some eyebrows, but if it’s just one and everything else is A’s and B’s, it should just be a blip on the radar. Definitely don’t lose sleep over it - it’s your portfolio that they really care most about after all!
@antaerctic I have a C+ in math from freshman year with extenuating circumstances so I’m not dead set on getting into iowa. I applied to my state summer school for the arts which I already got into so I always have a backup option!
@5toryt3ll3r But can you get into both (and then choose only one to do)? <3
hi i’m interested in both creative non-fiction and poetry so i want to do the general creative writing focus. but… will the a focus on all 3 genres be less helpful than focusing on just one genre (because you have more time and in-depth education)?? sorry if this isn’t articulated well, but i hope u understand my gist
@insidewires So the really cool thing about Iowa is that they don’t accept you to a specific concentration - instead, they accept you to the general program, and then you get to pick which class you would like to choose! They send you an acceptance packet that includes all the course descriptions for your year, depending on what you listed in your application that you would be interested in. For example, I had 8 different seminars to choose from over the Fiction, Poetry, and Creative Writing genres, since that’s what the portfolio I had submitted reflected.
@bluediary It sounds like you’re interested in all three genres, and if you don’t want to necessarily specialize in just one, then you should go with what you’d be happiest doing. However, it also depends on how many summers you have left during high school, and if you’re applying to any other writing seminars where you could maybe have the chance to explore just one genre in more depth, if that’s what you’re interested in. Can I ask what grade you’re in?
@antaerctic hey, i went to the summer writing residency last year too! were you in fiction or poetry?
also, about formatting in the writing sample, I have a general question: when you end one piece and want to put another one in, would you go to the next blank page and begin the next piece, or could you just skip a few lines and insert the next piece?
