@5toryt3ll3r I have an overall GPA of 4.00 (including writing and literature), although I have a 3.5 in Creative Writing. The Creative Writing teacher gave me a really good recommendation, and it’s a class meant for juniors (I’m a freshman). Will this look bad?
@goldenhour I just skipped a few lines in order to fit in as many pieces as possible, but if you’re not concerned about page length, either way can work
@insidewires I would just try and let them know that you’re in an out-of-level class, and it should be just fine!
By the way, since Iowa apps are closing tomorrow (good luck everyone!!) and everyone who’s contacted me for an application review is also applying to other creative writing camps, do you guys want me to make another thread on CC for the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop as well (deadline March 1)? I included that one in my video since I also applied/was accepted there, and since I know there’s a lot of overlap, just let me know if that would be helpful.
@goldenhour i was in fiction! we probably somewhat know each other then, lol. private message me so we can find out whether we’ve met before!!
@wistfulwords oof that honestly scares me omg. i really hope i make it in, despite my not-so-perfect grades :((
alrighty so idk how to private message here, dyu know how? i can send my email that way
@5toryt3ll3r I submitted 8 pages of material I liked and 2 pages of material that was good in my opinion but not my best work (I didn’t have any other options to fill up the pages), and I’m wondering if you think it’ll hurt my chances terribly? sorry this is kind of vague
I haven’t gotten accepted (or rejected, I’m an applicant) but I think you’ll be okay <3
@esruc1srenniw I think they really take into account that all the applicants are in high school. Nowadays, I look back on my portfolio that I submitted and I can see different elements I would’ve changed with the knowledge I have now, even the works that I felt were my best. It’s hard to be an impartial judge of your own work immediately after you’ve written it, so what you think is just good could be way better than you think! And either way, the admissions officers know that you’re young, so they aren’t necessarily expecting published-book-by-adult-author levels of quality anyway
@5toryt3ll3r hey thank you so much for saying that, it really made me feel better! and also for the videos and advice, what you’re doing is honestly goals <3
@esruc1srenniw Oh my gosh it’s absolutely my pleasure, you’re so welcome! When I was applying for all this stuff, I thought it was kind of sad that there were so few resources on them, especially when they can make such a difference in people’s lives, so I wanted to fill that void and help you guys out the way I would’ve wanted to be helped. Let me know if there are any other topics I can make videos on or otherwise give you advice on!
The wait is quite honestly killing me… two months is waaaay too long to hear back in my opinion, lmao.
I’m obviously not blaming them but I’m so nervous, aaaah
Anyone know of similar programs for younger students, especially current 9th graders (rising sophomores)?
@CaliMex Kenyon, Juniper, UVA, CSSSA (in california)
Oops I’m late to this but I was IYWS '18 so if anyone has questions about camp I’d be more than happy to gush about it.
@5toryt3ll3r If admitted to both, I’m curious if you have an opinion Iowa Young Writers Studio versus Kelly Writers House Summer Workshop? Which is a better program? Which would look better on a college application?
@kdm1582 That’s a great question, and I’m crossing my fingers that you get accepted to both!! Iowa is generally seen as the more prestigious option - it and the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop are two of the very top. Kelly is a great opportunity as well with fantastic instruction, but since it’s very young (it only opened to young writers in 2017), it’s less well-known, unless you’re hoping to go to UPenn, in which case it might be a nice credential. In terms of instruction, they’ll both be really good, though Iowa might edge it out a little bit, since their teachers are all graduates of and vetted by the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, which is extremely rigorous in its own right.
Do you ever hear early from iowa? Is UVA’s program good. It sounds amazing. Thank you
i know this thread is for iyws but kenyon results came out today! did anyone else apply too?
@lostintheclouds Yes! I was accepted for Session 1!
