Iowa Young Writers' Studio 2019

@mrcolumbiahopeful04 did you enter awards this year?

@wistfulwords i started writing before this year of like scholastic and stuff but didn’t really know about them before the deadlines. :frowning: I sent a submission of poems to scholastic and got an honorable mention but i want to win nationally next year. Goals hahah

@wontonandrice Don’t worry, you’re not alone! I’m really nervous as well because I have practically no creative writing experience.

Did anyone else here also apply to the Kelly Writers House Summer Workshop? Their website says decisions will be sent out before the end of March and I’m sort of losing hope because I haven’t gotten anything from them yet. Has anyone else who applied received a decision or notification yet?

@random72 I have a friend who applied to that and I think she said all decisions come out at the same time, so I don’t think I’d be nervous. I’ll let you know if I hear from her with anything

Hi, since there is a lot of action on this thread I though I would post here as well…my daughter applied to several programs, got into them and is still awaiting the Iowa decision. She is quite concerned over Kenyon’s no computer policy in the workshop. She doesn’t have an identified disability, but her hand writing is atrocious and her mind works far faster than her long hand, so she relies heavily on her typing ability. Does anyone have experience with Kenyon and can you let us know what the situation is like in the workshop itself. She has a lot of anxiety over this and some been there done that info would help…all the programs have a large price tag for us, so we are hoping to find the best fit. TIA

@BookLvr and @ivyfuture My daughter went to Kenyon last year. She loved the camp but not Gambier so much. I think that the camp can definitely help your chances of admission. They offer interviews to all campers. There is also an info session run by admissions. Some advice 1) go to the info session; 2) interview (and prepare for the interview - do a mock, put your resume together, etcetera):3) conduct yourself at Kenyon like admissions has an eye you, because they likely do. I believe that unlike most college camps, Kenyon uses this camp as a recruiting tool. Kenyon is a big Demonstrated Interest School. It’s very important to them. Frankly, going to this camp, doing well and showing enthusiasm is about the best possible way you could show DI for Kenyon.

@kdm1582 Thank you for those tips! And that is PERFECT! We just went to Kenyon over spring break and we were able to do the regular campus tour and the arts tour, but were not able to schedule an info session. I’m thrilled my daughter will get that opportunity during the camp.

And while Gambier is small, we had a really fun meal at The Village Inn and also enjoyed our stay at The Kenyon Inn…which had an electric car charger! (I drive a Tesla, so this was really nice for me!)

I am SO excited my daughter will get this amazing opportunity!

Hopefully someone can answer a general question on College Confidential. I don’t know if its me or this website is just a mess but I have a lot of problems posting. First, I often post comments and they don’t appear. Even worse, after I post a comment on a given thread, it stays in the Reply box. It seems I can’t rid of it, unless I post it a second or third time.

Has anyone heard yet from Kelly Writers House?

4 more days!!! @kdm1582 sorry I didn’t apply to Kelly

@kdm1582 I got an email that results come out april 15th

@kdm1582 I just received an email today saying they would try to get results out by April 12

@random72 my daughter got the same email. A two week delay means they must of gotten a ton of applications. Wow.

why didn’t i get an email about a delay? :frowning: does that mean i’ve been rejected or

i also got waitlisted from kenyon :(( so i’m really unsure about iowa now agh. fingers crossed & wholeheartedly praying :((((

Also did not get an email. Hope this doesn’t bode poorly… could be that they’ve crossed us off the prospective attendee list already though haha

@Mjkt7311 haha great time to cry!!

@antaerctic I also got waitlisted at Kenyon but I’m trying not to give up hope on Iowa just yet. I feel like the applications were different enough that people could come off much better in one than the other. That said, I was more confident in my Kenyon app so I’m definitely feeling the anxiety
