Hello! My daughter was accepted into the Kenyon Young Writers program for summer 2019; she’s still waiting to hear from Iowa. Two questions for those with experience with these programs: (1) does anyone know when Iowa sends out their acceptances or decisions? (2) if my daughter is accepted at both, are there substantial differences between the two programs? We’re not sure how to decide! Iowa required a writing sample, while Kenyon did not, which leads me to believe that Iowa may have more serious writers in attendance, but I don’t know if that is true at all. thanks in advance!
Have you applied ? I just read that applications are closed for the 2019 sessions at Kenyon College Young Writers Workshop.
Although I have no direct experience with either program, both are well respected.
Consider asking how many students attend each session.
Also, do you prefer your daughter / does she prefer to be on a small, cozy campus or on a large sprawling campus for her two week workshop ?
One thought is that this may be her only chance to experience staying on an elite, small college campus. Kenyon College has a gorgeous campus with great facilities.
Iowa will always be available to writers as it conducts lots of workshops & even offers graduate study in writing.
Yes, she applied to both programs back in February. She got into Kenyon. Still waiting on Iowa. She doesn’t care about campus size, only about the writing instruction and overall quality of the workshop. I’ve heard that students who attend Iowa’s program as high school students do well getting into good colleges – it might look good on college apps? She really cares about having motivated peers who are really strong writers, and peers and teachers who will challenge and inspire her. Might be true of both programs, but I don’t know.
Both schools are well known for top notch writing programs. Have you checked out the bios of the writing instructors / profs at each workshop ?
I suspect that students from both programs get into great colleges & universities because writing is primarily about intellect & creative intelligence.
Hi, I don’t mean to hijack this thread, but my daughter is in a similar situation, in that she applied to several programs, got into them and is still awaiting Iowa… She is quite concerned over Kenyon’s no computer policy in the workshop. She doesn’t have an identified disability, but her hand writing is atrocious and her mind works far faster than her long hand, so she relies heavily on her typing ability. Does anyone have experience with Kenyon and can you let us know what the situation is like in the workshop itself. She has a lot of anxiety over this and some been there done that info would help…all the programs have a large price tag for us, so we are hoping to find the best fit.
That’s interesting about the no computer policy. Do you know if Iowa allows writing on computers? Just curious. My daughter also has terrible handwriting and would much prefer writing on a computer. It’s frustrating the Iowa decision comes so late – same day the Kenyon deposit is due!
