Iowa Young Writers' Studio

Is the Iowa Young Writers' Studio considered prestigious, or would anyone recommend it? I live just outside the border of Iowa and this program has full tuition scholarships available, so it is something I can do. It accepts 132 applicants yearly, and Iowa does have the #1 program in the country for creative writing, so it would be a great experience for me, in my opinion.

No experience with this program. But, from what I read in your description, go for it. Sounds like it has all the good signs. It’s selective. It’s free. It’s associated with a good brand. Do the same teachers that teach at the grad program teach the high school students, because that would definitely make it worthwhile?

I went to the young writer’s program this past summer, and it was seriously one of the best experiences of my life. It is a highly prestigious program- the most selective pre-college writing workshop in the country- and it looks excellent on college apps. There’s a variety of classes to take, depending on what you’re interested in. I took the poetry class, which was amazing, and it really helped me with my writing. There’s time in the morning for seminar with your teacher, where you go over published writing and mechanics, and what exactly makes a piece high quality, and in the afternoon you workshop the writing of other members of your class. I would completely encourage you to apply if you love to write!

For those of you who have gotten into the Iowa Young Writers Program – What advice would you give to a student applying for this coming year?
