iPhone @ Penn

If anyone here has an iPhone at Penn, I have a question.

Is there a way to connect to the Internet (Safari) at Penn?

Because in order to connect to the AirPennNet network on computers, you need to install a CD, which you obviously can't do on an iPhone.

Whenever I'm prompted to join the AirPennNet network, it asks for a password - But there is no password... You need to enter your personal PennID and password to gain access.

Any help?
Thank you.

yeah, I have this same problem. I just enter my stuff in each time. On campus I really only need email updates - or baseball updates during the season.

Is there a cookie or something we can have on our iphones for that website?

what do you mean when you say you just enter your stuff in each time? doesn't it only prompt you for a password (and not a username)?

i think there's confusion between wireless-pennnet / whnowire, which accept a pennkey + password, and airpennnet, which requires securew2 (and which iphones don't currently support)

Tenebrousfire is exactly correct. AirPennNet is what's available all over the dorms and campuswide. Wireless-pennnet and whnowire is an old system that's available in public locations but is being discontinued at the end of June for various reasons (the biggest being that it is too expensive to license the service from the vendors).

I still think it's a stupid policy to discontinue it because so many people have mobile devices... However, this is a common concern on many college campuses and a lot of attention is being paid to develop a SecureW2 client for the iPhone. Google "securew2 iphone" and you can see what other people are doing.

I go to a website on safari, which asks me to put in my pennkey and password.

right, but you won't be able to after july 1

As a former Apple employee, I can tell you that the problem is with 802.1x authentication. AirPennNet uses 802.1x authentication, and the iPhone doesn't currently support it. It is a publicly announced feature of the iPhone 2.0 software which is rumored to be released this week. So it will be in place for your iPhone, and certainly will be in place by the time you get here in the fall :)

Oh goodness. If you got an iPod touch through that Back-to-School deal (and got it last week), would you be able to upgrade to iPhone 2.0 software (I'm kind of assuming the OS is nearly the same and that both will get upgraded near in time together). Please tell me this can just be a firmware update or something... don't render my shiny new iPod touch useless...

My friend is coming to Penn next year with an iPod touch and has the same concern as the above poster -- Will he be able to gain Internet access using this new upgrade for his iPod touch ?

Yes, the iPod touch will get the same wi-fi and SDK treatment. It will continue be the iPhone, sans its GSM and bluetooth transceivers.

alright...iphone 2.0 has been unveiled with its 3G wireless network, gps capability, and microsoft exchange compatibility. What does this mean for compatibility with Penn's wifi network and Wharton's email system?

^^Heads up, to avoid confusion, two separate things were announced: iPhone 2.0 and iPhone 3G. The 3G is the actual, physical new phone (sounds awesome too). But iPhone 2.0 is just the software, which all current iPhone users will get for free when it gets released (I think around late June?), and iPod Touch users will have to pay 10.00 USD for.
And yes, according the Apple website, the iPhone 2.0 will have 802.1x authentication, which means it should work with AirPennNet. I'm guessing Wharton's email is just dependent on being able to access the internet (unless it's some intranet deal, then I don't have a clue), so email should work too.

3G refers to the newest generation of mobile technology, not the phone itself.

As for the OP's question, can't you access the internet with EDGE?

probably wants faster speeds than what edge provides

Well, if I recall correctly, Jobs was referring to the new iPhone as the iPhone 3G, right?

indeed, the new phone is the iphone 3g, as listed on the apple store

Apple Store (U.S.) - iPhone 3G

so, just to clarify, if i have an ipod touch, how would i be able to get internet access on campus?

Yep, once you get the new iPhone 2.0 software update, which as far as I know hasn't been released yet. Oh, and for iPod touch users, it apparently'll cost 10 bucks (iPhone users can get it for free, Apple has other ways of accounting for the charge).

There is now a way for the iTouch to get onto AirPennNet. If you Google the terms "airpennnet iphone" from your iTouch on a network like AirPennNet-Guest (which lets you on before it asks for authentication), there is software that will let your iTouch connect to AirPennNet.
