Irvine Valley College or Orange Coast College?

Hi, I’m a high school senior that is choosing a community college to spend the upcoming two years, and I wanted to hear some advice on whether I should choose IVC or OCC. If any of you know anything about the campus vibe, community its in, or which school has better business or biology major, it would be really helpful if you could leave it in the comments below. A list of the pros and cons of both college would help me compare which school suits me better! Thanks!

You can use http://www.assist.org to see which has better coverage of the courses you need to transfer to your target UCs/CSUs in your target majors.

I know nothing about OCC and very little about IVC, but my nephew transferred out of IVC because he didn’t like the vibe. He’s now at Saddleback and prefers it. That’s a sample of one.

I can add that IVC and Saddleback are part of the same system and you can take classes at either campus if you want. My D took a couple of duel enrollment classes at Saddleback and liked it just fine.

I currently attend IVC and ive heard things about occ from teachers and other students. I believe that IVC students have a higher chance of transferring to schools compared to OCC because OCC has a reputation of being a chill and relaxed school, but it has a better social environment than IVC. My teachers often look down on the curriculum and academics at OCC. I have many friends that are business majors and also bio majors that go here. However something to consider is that if you go for the bio major you are looking to be at CC for 3 years because of the amount of courses you need to take, compared to a business major which you will most likely only be staying for 2 years. When looking at IVC, most students are looking to transfer out so there is very little social life here. If you join clubs there are numbers of students ranging from 10-30 in them. Students usually stop going to clubs towards the end of the semester which is true of most schools. However as a second year here I have gotten acceptance letters from schools such as UCSB, Chapman, UCR, UCD!

IVC has a solid track record of preparing students for transfer to four-year schools.

If you satisfy the eligibility requirements, IVC Honor’s Program is a great option. It regularly sends grads to top national universities, including the Ivies, Northwestern, Rice, UCB, UCLA, etc.
