I wrote an essay of about 1000 words but I can fit it into the common app online box space. Do i need to cut down the length of my essay ?

No, colleges don't care if you stop mid word.

Of course you need to edit it. Either that or send in a paper copy instead of doing it online, but 1000 words for a 500 word essay... I bet you've got some superflous, cuttable stuff.

...lol, this deserves some recognition, round of applause everybody... =P ^

damn... 1000 words.....

you should still try to edit it though. See if you can make it shorter.(word choices, rambling?...etc)

a friend of mine was admitted to Yale w/ 800something words for his Common App essay. It was light reading and didn't have too much extra junk in that. If you - and your peers, parents, teachers, etc - are convinced that it can't be shortened, go for it.

it`s okay if you go over the word limit a bit, but 1000 is just waaay beyond the border.

yeah. same here, i had a friend with an 800 word essay for her common app, but it was all passionate. if it's wonderful and cutting anything will ruin it, then u can keep it.... but make sure that's the case first

Can I ask what your topic is?

Mine is about 900, it was cut down from 1250 for Penn's essay, so I think i'm going with it..

it better be interesting because otherwise they will stop reading it half way and you're then screwed.

Its almost a narrative, all the words are needed, My regional rep for Penn noted it as "very creative and excellent" she remembered the context of the story instantly.

yes. since no human can read your boring self centered essays at 500 words/ min it is too long. remember only YOU have more than 2 mins to read it - the rest of the world is impatient already!

A buddy of mine actually sent a five-page epic when UChicago asked for a page and got in somehow- perhaps they reward craziness.

lol now that's an awesome story...
