Is 15000 the most merit aid given?

I dont know.. I am wondering the same thing.

i got 20k for engineering

hmmm...anyone not in engineering get more than 15,000....it is the 'presidential scholarship'..haha. so idk what they would call a better one.

My son got the $15,000 Presidential Scholarship, but he got American's $27,000 Presidential scholarship. He's going to American.

We're the same, rondafaye, but still undecided. Will be visiting both in the next few weeks; we haven't even seen American yet.

We've toured American. The campus is quite nice -- my son is very satisfied with his decision. Good luck!

What were your stats for those of you who received merit aid from GW?

$15K for the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences, I believe is the highest offered.

rondafaye...American does have a nice campus and still easy to get into town. A little off-topic, but be prepared to maybe buy a new mattress when staying at the dorms at American. My S was there over the summer and (at least where he was) the mattress was awful.

Good to know! A bad mattress -- ugh. I know my son really liked GW, but I have to say, he has been so practical. No whining or moaning. He basically said that $15,000 will still leave use paying, what, around $40,000 with travel? I didn't have to say a word, he said American was his choice because it's a good school, he still gets to be in DC and it's a lost more cost-effective.

It's interesting, some people seem to fare better with aid at American and others fare batter with GW's package. I think perhaps GW is better with it's need based aid, whereas American sometimes offers a higher merit award. If price is a strong deciding factor and a student likes both American and GW they should apply to both and see which package turns out better for them. You can't make any assumptions going in.

For us, GW covered everything over our EFC including the Presidents Scholarship. Basically, it will cost us the same whether he goes there or our IS school UNC. I was very happy to know that, at least for these two schools, money will not be a determining factor.

That is nice, atg4ever. Our in-state school is the University of Texas. My son was accepted there and they offered him a whopping $1,000 merit scholarship! He's 4/800+ with a 108 average and a 2290 SAT. The same thing happened with my daughter: $1,000 merit scholarship from UT with almost identical stats.

With his $27,000 Presidential scholarship, it will cost me less to send my son to American than to UT. My daughter received a full-tuition scholarship to UChicago, so it cost less to send her there than to UT, too.

No wonder states complain about "brain drain"!

Ouch, if that is what UT is giving for merit scholarship with such great stats then I am not surprise that they are leaving the state. In comparison, I consider us very satisfied with what North Carolina has done for us. I am still waiting to hear final word from UNC as to the FA package, but with the scholarships he has received and being IS, the cost is low. UNC also says that even if you have $1 of need, you can get a full laptop grant. It helps to have Lenovo's world headquarters just down the road in RTP.

As for GW, the Pres Sch. at $15K is all S received from them, but they were very good at maximizing all other avenues. The best part is that as long as he keeps his grades up (B for scholarships and C for grants) and our income keeps stable, the plan will never change. Kind of like a fixed rate mortgage, no chance of it increasing year to year, that is, as long as we remember to file our FAFSA and Profile every year by the due date.

Yes, that is what I really like about our experience with GW's cost. Everything remains stable, no uncertainties. Tuition is fixed and the scholarship my D receives is for 4 years. No surprises, which is great for someone like me who wants a concrete financial plan. We have been very happy with our package.

I recieved a Board of Trustees scholarship to GWU worth 20k

GW can be commended for keeping their financial aid packages stable...which was a question I asked of the financial aid officer who called our home, --immediately after D was admitted--to ask if we had any questions. I just wanted to be certain that we could manage years 2,3 and 4. She received a 1/2 tuition merit scholarship (entered Fall 2005). We were pleasantly surprised when her package for junior year came with an increase to her merit aid of around 20%...in recognition of her high gpa. She's registered and set to go for her senior year already. Grad school on the horizon. It has gone by very quickly.

My S received a 20k Presidential Scholarship for the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences

My S Presidential Academic Scholarship was for $10K, not the $20K I posted previously. Oops :-O
