Is 3.03 GPA well enough for transferring to some reputable school for CS ? RIT is my first priority

Hi guys, I have to start from the beginning. I started studying at an 4 year college as an Accounting major. I studied there for one year and i did really bad. My GPA was 2.18 at the end. I have 2 F, 1 D and 1 W on my 4 year college transcript. Later on I transferred to a community college and i changed my major to Computer Science. Due to my personal and serious family issues, my first semester was completely terrible. I ended up getting a 0.0 GPA with 4 F and 1 W. Being an international student, I struggled a lot but i didn’t quit. Finally I decided to visit a doctor. He helped me a lot with my personal issues. Next semester I repeated those 4 classes and I ended up getting a 3.54 GPA. After that for 2 consecutive semesters including 3 summer classes, my GPA was above 3.4. Right now when i calculate my cumulative GPA including that of 4 year college, it is 3.03. Guys please help me out? What are my chances of getting into RIT, Stony brook, RPI, Syracuse e.t.c or suggest me some other reputable college of CS in NY? I don’t want to end up going back to my home country because my parents will be devastated as they have spent a lot of money on my education?

I am sorry to say this, but your GPA is still extremely important to RIT and all the schools you are applying to. Yours is still very low, although the upward trend may be taken into account.

However, the fact that you had lots of issues settling into the college life the first couple of semesters, what is to say that you won’t do the same at RIT? That is most likely what they will be thinking. Because you were at a 4 year college first and ended with a 2.18 GPA and then transferred to a community college and ended with a 0.0 GPA, it is looking extremely unlikely.

Why not just stay at the community college? If your parents spent a lot of money, you want to graduate from a college at least. Good luck - hope for the best, but expect the worst. I would encourage you to apply as it won’t hurt, but don’t get your hopes up.

Perhaps another user will suggest a “reputable college of CS in NY” that would be a lower reach than the current schools you are looking at. In addition, try to get a summer internship at a tech company or something to make use of that CS degree and make you more competitive as an applicant.

What if i stay at the CC for another semester and repeat few courses to raise my GPA to 3.2? Will i have a better chance to get in?
