Questions regarding trying to transfer with low GPA

Long story short, my GPA at URI is 2.33. I’ve been part time for several years now and really would like to go back full time for a CS degree but would rather not go to URI. I also just took a CS class at CCRI this past semester and was thinking about taking a couple other courses this summer.

One question I have is will my CCRI GPA help me out when transferring if I get three A’s in the three courses I took there? Or should I try and take a few classes at URI to get my GPA up there and then transfer? I’m mainly looking at state schools so that I save some money but most the ones I’ve looked at seem to have decent CS programs so it may be even harder to get transfer. Some schools I’ve looked at are SUNY Buffalo, UConn, CU Boulder and Oregon.

Any recommendations for my situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

@joej2953 you need to check with your academic advisor but I’m pretty sure that CCRI course should count. Your GPA is far too low for a transfer. Before looking for greener grass, you need to identify the problem that you’re having. CS is a very difficult major though worthwhile. Have you looked at New England Tech for a program? You won’t get into UConn with that GPA. You won’t get merit aid. Are any of these schools affordable?

@gearmom Thanks for the response. I know CS is a difficult major but the reason my GPA is low isn’t because I can’t handle difficult classes, it’s because I screwed off in electives. The cost of a state school wouldn’t be too much of an issue. I’d probably get a new driver’s license of whatever state I went to right away and attempt to get in state tuition after 12 months.

My question is more or less could I transfer from CCRI after taking 3 courses there and not bring up my history at URI until I’m into a new school? Or is this a bad idea? I also have enough math credits at URI that I’d have a math minor so I really don’t want to lose those.

Also New England Tech has no programs that interest me and one of the main reasons I want to transfer is to get out of RI.

@joej2953 Being an OOS student is very expensive. It really won’t provide any benefit other than you like it. Go run the financial calculators for each of the state schools and let me know if they are still affordable. We are upper middle class-ish and they would be a reach for us. It is also difficult to get instate status for some states. It might be more practical to get an associate degree at CCRI and save money or summer classes at URI are cheaper and often times easier than classes during the year. How many credits do you have? Can you use a second grade option if you did poorly first semester by retaking the class and replacing the grade so it doesn’t ding your GPA?

Also, you really need to sit with your advisor because having classes count on the transfer (if you get accepted) might be tricky. How many credits do you have?

You can’t hide your URI record.
