Is 3.77 A Good Freshman GPA

After my first year at W&M, I obtained a 3.77 and made dean’s list both semesters. I took a pretty difficult course load and got As in courses like gen chem, orgo, and Calc 2. I’m kind of curious about what percentile that would put me for the class of 2019.

It’s a fantastic freshman GPA! It’s a great place to start off at especially given your rigorous courseload at a college that is well established for its robust academics. Don’t worry so much about percentiles because William & Mary doesn’t rank its students, but if you keep up the good work and continue to excel in your classes, you have a good chance of graduating Summa Cum Laude and possibly get inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honors society.

@shawnspencer Thanks for the reply! I figured I was doing pretty well, but I lived in Monroe and most people I talked to had 3.5s and 3.6s and some even had 3.9+s. However, almost everyone else seemed to have 3.3 or lower honestly, and then it made me curious if there was some sort of percent for my class. I assume I’m probably between the top 7-10%, but I guess there’s no way to find out for sure.

I also got a 3.91 this past semester because I got adjusted to college life better than when I first arrived. I’m taking hard classes in pre-med but I should be able to raise it since I’m done with calculus and that’s one of my worst subjects haha. Is Summa a 3.8? Hopefully I’ll have a shot at PBK if I keep it up…I do a lot of chem research and am actively involved.

You appear to be solid my friend and if you keep this up you will be very competitive to get into William & Mary. Make sure you have a good round of extra-curriculars to even yourself out.

@Bruton I already got accepted…I’m a sophomore at the college now haha. That was my freshman college GPA.

William & Mary’s cutoffs are 3.5 for cum laude, 3.65 for magna, and 3.8 for summa: http://www.wm.edu/offices/registrar/studentsandalumni/graduation/ughonors/index.php
But I’m curious about why you’re putting so much emphasis on GPA. Is there something you want to do that has a strict GPA cutoff?

Much more likely to be a humble brag “is my 18.9 gpa good or like super bad”?

Few programs have strict cut offs, the highest I’ve ever seen is a MPhil at Cambridge that expects applicants to have a 3.85 or higher. William and Mary itself has next to nothing that you’d “need” that gpa for.
