Is $56k a year really worth it for NYU?

I got into NYU Business & Political Economy program in Stern, but I don't know if should go! I've also been accepted at UCLA and UCSD (and some others) but those are the three I'm currently looking to attend. I'm not quite sure if I'd go into business if I went to UCLA or UCSD (applied as anthropology major), I'm keeping my options open still. I live in CA so I'd get the CA tuition price, so est. cost per year at UCLA or UCSD would be about $28k-29k...compared to the NYU price tag of $56,500 per year. Would it be worth it to go to NYU? Because I'm also going to go to grad school as well...

Wow. Either choice sounds painful.

Hi, Iwould go UCLA, it is a very good school. Success is from hard-working, not the name of school, you can save almost 30K totally which you can use this money to start your business.

Yeah, well I want to go into corporate law if I end up going to NYU. I’m not sure if an undergraduate degree from Stern (along with the amazing internships, job offers, and connections) would be worth the humongous price tag!!! And I don’t qualify for financial aid anywhere…so it sucks. Haha.

If you want to do Corporate Law, then NY’s program will probably help you much much more than LA or SD’s anthropology program. I wouldn’t pay 30k for Anthropology, honestly.

Go to UCLA and then consider going out-of-state for grad school. Paying 2x the price for undergrad is not worth it IMO. Good Luck!

If you know you’ll become a rich guy then year. Make sure you borrow H.G. Wells’ time machine to view the future to verify that, though, before you decide to go to NYU.

New York City IS amazing…I wouldn’t trade it for anything. So you’ll be getting the atmosphere + great nightlife as well as the school Idk, i’d be leaning towards NYU…but it is a huge sacrifice.

I notice that no one is recommending UCSD. You are probably right to take that school out of the equation, although you will certainly be challenged intellectually if you do decide to attend.

Save on undergraduate costs when you know that you will be going to grad school later on.
No, I don’t think NYU (or any other school) is worth $56,000 PER YEAR times 4 for an undergrad. degree. If you love the idea of NYU,
save your money now and go there for grad school.

well I want to go into corporate law *

Go to UCLA…change your major to something that works better for corporate law. You’ll need your money for a great law school. A grad from UCLA with good grades and a strong LSAT can get into any law school.

NYU is not worth the money. (I’m starting to really dislike that school. What a pathetic excuse for a top school that it can so poorly help its students financially. I realize that this student may not have need, but many others have big need. ** If NYU is so great for business and finance, why hasn’t it figured out a way to better help its students financially ???** Huh???)

DO NOT GO TO NYU AT THAT PRICE.
The UC’s you listed have just as big name recognition, just not worth that much money to attend NYU!!!

Thanks everyone! I’m not 100% sure about going into corporate law, I’ve been thinking of going into government or maybe even something totally different! And now, George Washington just offered me $20k in scholarships, which will make it about $30k a year. Now
what?

Still UCLA. IMO, NYU is not really that elite a school (though some programs are certainly elite). The draw of Greenwich Village allows them to skimp on financial aid and get loads of applicants, but those factors tend to exaggerate the quality of the university as a whole.

ha I’m actually struggling with the exact same problem. I got into Stern’s BPE program and [pending Ivy decisions today] it’s looking like my top choice. I got a $20,000 “Stern Scholarship” which I assume is based on merit and I was offered work study eligibility and enough federal loan money to cover the rest of tuition.

While I’m grateful for the fact that I won’t have to go to a bank for my loans, I don’t know if it’s worth it entirely. I lean towards going to NYU though. I’m from Long Island and I just can’t imagine saying no to New York City.

I definitely recommend racking up crushing debt for NYU. It might seem like a lot now, but once you have a decent job working in the financial sector you’ll barely notice the massive, usurious payments. It might take a little while, but you’ll be out of debt and living large. And even if you don’t get a job right out of college, there’s always grad school to help you defer payments on loans.

No. Save the money and use it for Graduate school. My annual expense at elite MBA school (higher than Stern), which lasts 2 years instead of 4, only costs ~$70K.

Well the reason why Im not getting aid is bcuz I can afford it, but I want to use my investments for as long as possible. If I use it all on undergraduate at nyu, I won’t have any money left…but if I go to somewhere cheaper, I’ll have enough money to last me to grad school as well. That’s why it’s tough. I wouldn’t necessarily be going into debt, I’d just be spending more money than I Would like to.

NYU is a waste of money. If you’re getting a job in New York City there is really no difference between NYU and Baruch.

I think there is too much hype about NYU

Don’t say that. NYU is heaps better than Baruch, even with the price tag. If you can’t afford NYU and end up going to Baruch (or another cheap inferior school), Baruch may be the better option, but it is not better.

(This doesn’t pertain to the OP’s situation, but I just wanted to say that.)
